I’m sure its all crossed our minds. The what if. What if I joined the military what would happen to my family and loved ones if i’m killed in the line of duty? What if I come back after death? Huh? Yes that last question makes complete sense when you are speaking of the film The Revenant. released in 2009 this film finally hit US shores on DVD this past tuesday and I heard of it but not watched until now. Blending comedy and gore (nothing new in the zombie world) this film hit VOD back on August 24 and while was limited prompted the release of DVD soon after. I’m sure there are others but here is my review of The Revenant.
First off this movie is way funnier than expected. It hints at a Shaun of The Dead buddy tale but think more of the end of Shaun to know what I’m talking about. Now I know the general public is tired of zombie films but I will say give this one a chance. The film stars David Anders in the lead as 2nd lt. Bart Gregory who is shot in the head on patrol in Iraq. Shortly after his body is returned to the states and after his funeral Bart awakens and is not too happy he is dead. The only people who can help him is long time friend Joey and girlfriend Janet. Soon Joey and Bart find out that Bart needs blood to stay alive which makes them think he is a vampire. He can survive all other vampire traits so they think he is a zombie but with no lust for brains they think he is somewhere in between hence the name The Revenant.
The two soons find a way to make sure Bart is fed as they stumble upon a robbery at the liquor store. After killing the gangster and draining him of all his blood Bart and Joey decide to go on a killing spree taking out criminals one by one becoming local heroes and vigilantes. Janet is unaware that Bart needs blood to stay alive. Someone not a fan of their actions named Mathilda wants to tell Janet what’s going on but dies before she can leak the news. Joey eventually wants to have the same powers of Bart and begs him to turn him. Bart won’t but after a botched save attempt Joey gets wounded and Bart must turn him to save him.
Finally it gets out to to Janet about Bart and Joey and she begs Bart to turn her as well so they could live forever. In the heat of passion Bart accidentally kills Janet and Joey returns and is not happy. After a hilarious fight to the un death between the two they settle when Joey no longer can talk and Bart must use a vibrator to massage his vocal cords to understand him. Like I said this movie is hilarious. Line after line continues to come out from the duo and allows The Revenant to move at a good pace. The movie is a little long for what its about and the ending is subpar. Bart has to find a way to kill himself to stop the madness and you are with him through the entire trip.
This is a film you could easily pass on and once it’s seen you will wonder how you missed it. Go grab a copy of this rental today as it is an unknown gem in the rather mundane and monotonous zombie genre.
