I’ve wanted to see Shoreline Village again for the first time in at least two decades so Dorothy and I enjoyed an evening at the beach. I was also looking for a restaurant to do a restaurant review. The incredibly impressive Parker’s Lighthouse wasn’t in our budget so we looked for another choice. The Yard House fit the bill. Fortunately it proved to be an excellent choice.
Fresh Brewed Iced Tea, $2.95
Yard House has three different flavors of fresh brewed iced tea. Kelsi, our exceptional server, likes iced tea too so we had an enjoyable chat about these choices. I started with the Blackberry Jasmine Green tea. I then tried the Passion Fruit, a black tea, and finally their regular black tea. All three were unsweetened. I was surprised to find I enjoyed the Blackberry Jasmine Green tea. Nevertheless, my favorite remains black tea.
Chicken Lettuce Wrap, $5.62
We started with an appetizer, the Chicken Lettuce Wrap. Yard House served it with three dipping sauces. My favorite was the sweet chili Firecracker Spicy Peanut Sauce. This was deliciously sweet with a hint of bite.
Dorothy decided to add Edamame, which is a refreshing appetizer of soybeans served fresh and sprinkled with kosher salt.
Penne with Chicken, $10.55 for lunch portion
As we were there at Happy Hour, Dorothy was able to order off the lunch menu. This chicken dish included asparagus, crimini mushrooms, and sun-dried tomatoes in Marsala cream sauce dusted with parmesan. It was a delicious dish, very flavorful.
Crab Crusted Swordfish, $23.95
I love to try seafood occasionally, especially when I am on the coast. The Yard House’s Crab Crusted Swordfish looked delightful. It tasted heavenly. It came with wasabi mashed potatoes, snow peas, carrots, shallots, chives, Chablis wine & lemon grass buerre blanc. In their crab crust, Yard House used snow crab. I substituted brown rice for the wasabi mashed potatoes.
Normally in dishes like this, we find restaurants use lump crab. Dorothy and I both find the lump crab seems to lack flavor. I was really surprised, therefore, when the crab in this dish proved so flavorful. Kelsi didn’t know what they used when I asked so she got me a printout of the ingredients. Yard House used Snow Crab, one of our favorites because it’s so sweet.
Dessert – Mini Trio Sampler, $8.95
Mini Crème Brûlée
We got the Mini Trio Sampler which included Lemon Soufflé, Peach Apple Cobbler and Chocolate Soufflé. We substituted the Mini Crème Brûlée for the Lemon Soufflé for only $1.00 more. It was vanilla bean custard & chocolate topped with caramelized bananas. There was also chocolate on the bottom.
The Mini Chocolate Soufflé
This dessert is like the molten cake with a liquid chocolate center. It’s served warm with vanilla ice cream.
Mini Peach Apple Cobbler
The Peach Apple Cobbler was fabulous. The Yard House serves it warm too with caramel ice cream.
This was a wonderful choice for dessert. We loved each of these mini desserts. Dorothy and I appreciate restaurants who offer this choice because usually we prefer a sample of several to one large dessert.
Kelsi and her coworkers provided extraordinary service. As I love fresh brewed iced tea, it was a treat to have a server who also likes iced tea and can relate to the importance of it being fresh brewed instead of fountain or reconstituted concentrate. It was delightful getting her take on the Yard House’s three different flavors of fresh brewed iced tea.
Kelsi always went the extra mile. When I wanted to know which type of crab they used in crab crust on my swordfish, she printed out a list of ingredients for me. Wonderful extra level of service!
Overall Rating: 5
The Yard House excelled at all of the dishes from appetizers to main entrées and then desserts. The service was second to none. And this location was itself delightful with the view of Rainbow Harbor. Being fond of tourist attractions like San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39, we find it a treat that Long Beach offers the Shoreline Village and The Pike on Rainbow Harbor. We had a delightful day here topped off by an exceptional dining experience at the Yard House.
