Labor Day stands to recognize the contributions and achievements of American workers which became a federal holiday in 1894. With issues such as unemployment and underemployment it is important for us to not just think of this as a three day weekend from work or school, but to reflect on the power of the American worker and the American spirit of hard work.
I know that Chicago is a working city so let’s all follow the age old call to arms… Work hard Play hard! Here are a few suggestions of what you can do this week with your peeps!
Ah there is nothing like having a good home cooked meal with family and friends. Don’t let the little bit of rain stop you from having a good time. This is the perfect time to pull out your all white wardrobe and flaunt it because after this weekend white technically is not allowed, well according to the fashion police.
2. Attend the African Festival of the Arts Chicago:
The Godfather of funk, George Clinton, will be in town this weekend funking it up in Chicago with the electric mix of jazz and African music. If you love to dance this would be a great event to go to for fun and culture. This 23rd annual event will be held in Chicago from Aug. 31st- September 3rd in Washington Park (5100 S. Cottage Grove Ave).
3. Crush in Old Town:
If you are located near or in Old Town Chicago, the Crush in Old Town festival would be the perfect event to go to with the family for food, live entertainment, and to see the amazing artwork and custom designs of local Chicago talents. The two day festival takes place on Sept 1st and Sept 2nd from noon-10pm (1337 N. Wells St).
4. Hit the Movie Theatres:
According to the Hollywood Reporter, new movie “Lawless” which stars quite a few hunks including Tom “Bane” Hardy and Guy Pearce in supporting roles comes in No. 2 behind “The Possession” which is produced by Evil Dead and Spiderman director Sam Raimi. I could spend a raining day or a stormy night with either of these two movies.
5. Snuggle with your Honey:
Raining days are great to snuggle with someone watching a good movie or a favorite television show with a nice glass of wine or two. After all, most of us have a three day weekend off so why not catch up and rekindle the fire in the relationship that could have been snuffed out by long work weeks. Let the rain fall down.
Let’s not forget how hard everyone has worked regardless of what job or what title you hold, we are all considered to be the working class of America. At least we can show appreciation toward one another and amongst it all have a little fun this weekend in a positive light.
