Interning for me has been a wonderful experience because not only has it allowed me to gain experience in many industries of interest, but it also has allowed me to network, and build stable relationships among other professionals in the same industry.
Often times we find ourselves finding mentors that will take us under their wings to mentor us, help support us through our journey not only academically, personally, but also professionally as well which will help boast our confidence because it gives us even a stronger support system.
Since 2006 attending Kaplan University the opportunity presented itself after having what seemed like thousands of conversations with Ian the IT Career Specialist he brought to my attention that an IT Internship had been implemented into the Advanced Start Bachelor of Science in Information Technology-Network Administration Program, which is the program that allowed me to advance my expertise in the IT Industry, but also to be able to get into the field itself while also having the degree under my belt.
Being able to work in the Technology Center as a host, tutor, and an assistant allowed me to teach multiple courses to students that needed help with challenging assignments. Welcoming them into the technology center into an environment which allowed them to feel comfortable, where they could come to relax, and have fun while learning, and assisting the supervisor with other outside duties broaden my knowledge in other areas such as designing reports for supervisors, implementing databases from scratch in short time frames such as 10 weeks.
What if certain circumstances in my life prevent me from relocating to participate in an internship? Life has its challenges, and you may feel like there is no right time to select when to participate to do an internship. Consider writing down your weekly schedule, evaluate your time and how much time you think you commit to each task.
When considering an internship search online for virtual opportunities search sites such as www.internships.com but keep in mind that some companies may assume that the candidate will be willing to participate in person on site, and not virtually.
How long should an internship be? While considering one’s industry the candidate can usually select how long they would like to participate in the internship within the organization. Explore one’s options by going back to your schedule like before thinking how much time you would like to dedicate to an internship, whether it will be full-time, part-time, paid, or virtually.
Also, keep in mind based on weeks, or months as well such as if you are an IT Major considering one to be anywhere from two weeks to 10 weeks, or maybe six months depending on how much experience you are looking to get from it.
Do companies value internships on resumes? Yes. Absolutely!! Because it shows candidates are serious about their future and their chosen profession. It also shows professionals are working hard to gain the necessary experience needed in order to land positions in their area of expertise.
