Ohio’s Mr. Football
Given annually to the state’s most outstanding player, Ohio’s Mr. Football award can be a pretty prestigious thing, considering that Ohio is considered to be one of the top five states in the country for high school talent. This year, there are many outstanding candidates to take home this award, and the Cleveland area boasts two that are considered to be in a dead heat on the top of everyone’s list. Some of the top players for this year’s award are as follows:
Kareem Hunt, RB Willoughby South…. What hasn’t Kareem Hunt done in his career? After rushing for over 2400 yards last season, Hunt topped that this year, rushing for 2505 yards and an astounding 43 touchdowns. He is simply the best running back in the state of Ohio. Hunt leads the Rebels into a first round playoff game this Saturday against North Royalton. The only question about Hunt’s ability to win the award is a lack of big name on South’s schedule.
Mitch Trubisky, QB Mentor…. What a career Trubisky has had. The top rated QB in Ohio, Trubisky became Mentor’s all-time leading passer this season, surpassing former Mr. Ohio winner Bart Tanski. He has thrown for near 2500 yards, and rushed for 461. He leads the Cardinals into the playoffs this week as they host Warren Harding.
Malik Zaire, QB Kettering Alter…. The Notre Dame recruit runs Alter’s Triple Option offense to a tee. A member of the prestigious Elite 11 quarterback camp seen on ESPNU, Zaire has thrown for 1651 yards, and has run for 1017. The Knights open their playoff season at home against Springfield Shawnee.
Alfred Ramsby, QB Cincinnati Colerain…. Running Colerain’s Winged -T offense, Ramsby has put up some astounding numbers. He is averaging 23 yards per pass completion, throwing for 1281 yards, and has averaged 8.7 yards per carry for the state’s second ranked team. Colerain will look to stay unbeaten as they have their rematch with Cincinnati St. Xavier Saturday night.
Tra’Von Chapman, QB Kent Roosevelt…. Simply the best player in Ohio that no one has heard about. The University of Pittsburgh recruit has thrown for near 2500 yards and 30 touchdowns. The dual threat star leads the Rough Riders into their first round playoff game against Akron Ellet.
Tracy Sprinkle, DE Elyria…. Maybe the best defensive player in Ohio. Jet quick off the snap, Sprinkle led Elyria to a 7-3 record in the tough Northeast Ohio Conference. An Ohio State recruit, Sprinkle is hurt by the fact that his team did not make the state playoffs.
JuWuan Woodley, RB Columbus Bishop Hartley…. The best player on the best team in Division IV. Will play LB at the University of Toledo. Defensive Player of the Year last year in Ohio. Has rushed for 1516 yards and 21 touchdowns against a mostly Division I and Division II schedule. Hartley takes on Upper Sandusky in the first round of the playoffs.
Nick Holley, QB/DB Toledo Whitmer…. A three year starter at defensive back, Holley moved to QB this year, and the Whitmer offense hasn’t missed a beat. He pulls the trigger on an offense that averages over 44 points a game, and has blown through all ten of its opponets. Third ranked in the state, Whitmer and Holley take on Avon Lake in the first round of the playoffs.
Keith Watkins, RB Cincinnati Moeller…. Playing arguably the state’s most difficult schedule, the junior running back has led the tradition rich Moeller back into promindence. Watkins led the Crusaders to an 8-2 record and a first round home playoff game against Huber Heights Wayne. Watkins rushed for 1821 yards and 21 touchdowns.
So who will win?
This is a Cleveland kind of year. It’s going to come down to the two players from the Cleveland area, Kareem Hunt and Mitch Trubisky. The margin of victory is going to be razor close….
But the nod is going to go to Kareem Hunt…
