Weta Workshop has revealed two new sculpture installations to help promote the upcoming premiere of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ in Wellington. Earlier, Weta had reported that they would be working on a unique installation for ‘The Hobbit’ in Wellington’s airport, and now Tolkien fans can enjoy the fruits of their labor.
The airport sculpture is a massive Gollum statue, showing the fiend diving for fish in the airport’s main lounge. Checkout the slideshow for numerous shots of the incredibly lifelike sculpture and the team responsible for putting on the final touches. Setup took almost round-the-clock work over three days. According to TheOneRing.net:
Rob Gillies and Sarah Morris. Richard made a short speech to thank the team that made the incredibly realistic sculpture – a testament not only to their talent and hard work, but also to the technology and skills Weta has developed. He also thanked the “excellent” team at Wellington Airport, who have been a pleasure to work with in creating something that would bring delight to Wellington’s visitors. Airport CEO Steve Sanderson said the airport was proud to work with Weta and have such a magnificent sculpture on display. “Everyone will be amazed when they enter the terminal.
The second sculpture is an installation on top of Wellington’s NZ Post building (also viewable in the slideshow). It is a silhouetted depiction of Bilbo and the 13 dwarves as they set off on their adventure. The silhouettes will be lit up at night for greater contrast against the building backdrops.
Sir Richard Taylor said this about the challenge Weta Workshop faced:
It’s quite a significant job with respect to the engineering. Because of the wind loading in that part of the city they have had to built quite substantially. Wellington is a very challenging environment relative to most other cities in the world, because of the wind and the dramatic shift in temperatures. Even over 24 hours it can change so dramatically.
He also commented on Weta’s design and working with their team:
It’s certainly the best because it adorns their building and creates a great focus onto it. It’s a really neat idea on a very large scale. They are an adventurous company who are doing some cool stuff on an art level so it was great to work with them on this. This sort of stuff for us is an absolute joy because we love making large-scale art sculptures and installations. There’s a great deal of enjoyment in doing this sort of stuff.
