An influx of mediocre releases—both new and old—resulted in this weekend’s box office being one of the worst ever: the worst, in fact, since this same weekend back in 2008. The horror film “The Possession” was the number one movie for the second week in a row with a measly $9.5 million, following by “Lawless”, which stayed in second with $6 million.
The weekend’s only new wide release, the romantic drama “The Words”, debuted in third with only $5 million, despite boasting an all-star cast including Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, and Olivia Wilde. Meanwhile, the thriller “The Cold Light of Day” just barely missed making the top 12, coming with thirteenth with $1.8 million. The classic Indiana Jones adventure “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, which was rereleased this weekend exclusively in IMAX theaters, followed with an impressive $1.7 million.
Next weekend we’ll see if the release of Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” in 3D—a film that was a major box office success in its initial run—can bring the box office out of the hole it’s currently in.
