With its spooky theme and family appeal, it’s no surprise that the animated comedy “Hotel Transylvania” was the number one movie at the box office this weekend. The monster flick broke the record for the highest-grossing September opening weekend ever with $43 million.
That movie was followed by another new release, “Looper”, an adult sci-fi thriller. That movie’s stars—Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing the same character—and its time travel twist brought out enough audiences to have it gross a substantial $21.2 million. One of last weekend’s number one movies, the cop flick “End of Watch”—which was previously tied in the top spot with the horror film “House at the End of the Street”— dropped to third with $8 million.
“Won’t Back Down”, a drama about the education system starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis, was the weekend’s other wide release, but it did not find the success its competitors did. That movie debuted in only tenth with $2.7 million.
A couple smaller releases also found success this weekend. The musical comedy “Pitch Perfect” opened in just 335 theaters nationwide, but came in sixth with $5.2 million, performing much better than most of the films in wide release. Meanwhile, the coming-of-age tale “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” expanded to almost a hundred more theaters this weekend, falling just short of the top 12 with an impressive $1.1 million.
