After a sluggish first half, the Venice Indians (6-2, 1-1) offense got in gear and defeated Chaminade-Madonna (6-2) 45-29 Friday night in a non-district game at Powell-Davis Stadium in Venice, FL. Quarterback Kale Youtzy and running back Terry Polk each rushed for over 200 yards and tallied three touchdowns apiece to lead the Indians to their sixth victory of the season.
Chaminade had the best scoring opportunity in the first quarter when quarterback Sean White led his team to the Venice four yard line before fumbling an exchange from center which gave the ball back to the Indians. The game was scoreless after the first 12 minutes.
White made up for the error early in the second quarter with a six yard touchdown pass, the first of four he would toss in the game, to DeMarco Haynes to give the Lions a 7-0 lead.
Venice answered back on its next possession on a 70 yard scoring drive including runs of 11 and 58 yards by Kale Youtzy capped off by the senior quarterback taking it into the end zone from 1 yard out to tie the game at 7-7.
Despite being pinned inside their own 20 for most of the first half, Venice took a 10-7 lead into halftime when kicker Stone Wilson booted a 45 yard field goal with 2.9 seconds left in the second quarter. That kick fired up the Indians offense which came out in the second half and scored 35 points against a Lions defense which allowed an average of 13 points a game this season.
Terry Polk burst through the line and galloped for a 50 yard touchdown to give Venice a 17-7 lead early in the third quarter. Kale Youtzy then led an 80 yard drive capped off by his second 1 yard touchdown run of the contest to put the Indians up 24-7.
Chaminade got back on track when Sean White connected with Alex Thomas on a 62 yard scoring pass with: 14 seconds remaining in the third quarter. A missed extra point pulled the Lions to within 11 points, the closest they would get the rest of the game at 24-13.
Terry Polk scored his second touchdown of the game on the Indians next time with the ball on a three yard run topping off a 65 yard scoring drive.
Polk added a 24 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Kale Youtzy found another big hole and jaunted 51 yards for the Indians final tally of the night.
Chaminade quarterback Sean White threw two touchdown passes against Venice second stringers late in the game to total four on the night and 24 for the season.
Terry Polk totaled 234 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns. Kale Youtzy had 239 yards rushing on 15 carries and three touchdowns.
Venice will play its final district 7A game next Friday night (Nov. 2) at home against the Braden River Pirates (1-8, 0-2). A victory for the Indians cements a second place finish in the district behind undefeated Manatee and a playoff game on the road November 16.
