No doubt the news of Hurricane Sandy being a super-storm is frightening so many Americans on our U.S coastal regions. With Sandy about to hit landfall people are hunkering down in their homes hoping the devastation will pass them by as the Lord passed over the children of Israel in Egypt the night he killed the first born of every household. No matter how powerful and crushing a natural disaster is, it still seems a bit melodramatic to compare a hurricane to a divine punishment but that is what a lot of religious leaders do during trying times even to this day.
Oct. 29 the online media Think Progress LGBT published a very spooked out article about the religious implication of Hurricane Sandy. Oh why don’t we tell it like is. Another preacher says that Hurricane Sandy is God’s punishment upon the U.S. for history and politics siding with the gay community. According to Think Progress LGBT John McTernan made the same statements about Hurricane Isaac and Hurricane Katrina because they both happened during the time of Southern Decadence in New Orleans.
For those of you who don’t know about this event, it happens every year during Labor Day Weekend and it rivals the famous Mardi Gras. It is an event that specifically celebrates free thinking and the gay spirit. This is something, without a doubt, John McTernan would like to see brought to a grinding halt. But if you listen to McTernan’s path of divine logic God likes to destroy and teach lessons in multiples of three. It seems to be a holy number in the Christian faith. The heart, body, soul and faith, hope charity and the Holy Spirit, Jesus and God all are symbols of this number in a sacred trinity.
It also could mean that the number three is about as far as any sensible person will go when told irrational or illogical rhetoric of hate. If someone is going to hate or be prejudice against another group why bring God into the mix at any opportunistic time? A powerful hurricane is in our mists and this beautiful destructive force hurts and kills everyone. What about people of faith who don’t agree with homosexuality? If Hurricane Sandy kills any of them then what is God trying to prove by killing those who follow and agree with the implied teachings of faith?
A natural disaster is like a bullet. It has no face or name. It kills without prejudice no matter who is its path. For anyone to believe or state that a creation of nature can be discriminatory is someone that may need their medication checked. Hurricanes, volcanoes and earthquakes are all of nature and if you are caught at the right place at the right time, you can die. This basic and simple truth should not be twisted to fit the ideology of man and God should not be used as the reason for sorrow and pain.
