When “X Factor” U.K. judge Tulisa Contostvalos mentored girl group Little Mix in 2011, she witnessed firsthand the budding romance between Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards and One Direction’s Zayn Malik. Contostavlos, 24, has now admitted in an interview on 4Music’s “The Crush” that Malik pursued Edwards, but she encouraged Edwards to play hard-to-get.
“I was involved in that from the start,” Contostavlos said, “I was the first person that she came to and was like ‘Zayn’s, you know…’ so I was like ‘Right, this is what you need to do, don’t text him back. Wait!’ She was like, ‘He’s asked me to come ’round his house,’ and I was like ‘What time is it? No!No! It’s too late!'”
While Malik was trying to hook up with Edwards in late 2011, she was denying that they were dating.
Malik and Edwards eventually went public with their romance in the spring of 2012.
Boy band One Direction and girl group Little Mix were both formed on “The X Factor” U.K., since the members of each group originally auditioned for the show as solo singers but were rejected, and then put together in a group by “X Factor” decision makers. One Direction and Little Mix have each had No. 1 singles in the U.K.
One Direction came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010. Simon Cowell, who was One Direction’s mentor when he was a judge on the show, signed the group to Syco Music, the record company that he owns with Sony Music.
In 2011, Little Mix became the first group to win on “The X Factor” U.K., and the group won a record deal with Syco Music as part of the grand prize.
Little Mix and One Direction crossed paths several times in 2011 when One Direction performed on “The X Factor” U.K. three times. One Direction was also featured on the 2011 “X Factor” U.K. charity single “Wishing on a Star,” with JLS and the Top 16 finalist acts from the show that year.
One Direction and Little Mix will each release new albums in 2012. One Direction’s second album, “Take Me Home,” will be released in the U.S. and Canada on November 13, 2012, and in other countries on November 12, 2012. Little Mix’s first album (title to be announced) is scheduled for a U.K. release on November 19, 2012. (That release date is subject to change.)
“Wings,” the first single from Little Mix’s debut album, was released in the U.K. on August 26, 2012, and it is expected to debut at No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart.
Edwards isn’t the only member of Little Mix who got dating advice from Contostavlos. In an August 2012 interview with the Daily Record, Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock said that Contostavlos advised all of the members of Little Mix on which famous men to avoid dating.
