Tom Cruise has filed a lawsuit against Life & Style magazine for publishing claims that he abandoned his daughter, Suri Cruise, following his separation from his wife Katie Holmes. The magazine ran a story with the headline “Suri in Tears: Abandoned by Her Dad” over the summer, which has sent Cruise’s attorney Bert Fields into action.
“Tom doesn’t go around suing people. He’s not a litigious guy,” Fields said in a statement this week. “But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he’s going to sue.”
Tom Cruise Lawsuit: Actor Sues Over Suri Cruise Abandonment Claims
In the Tom Cruise lawsuit, the Top Gun actor asks for $50 million for defamation of character stemming from the publication circulating around the country and the story being reported worldwide. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes separated in June, when Katie and Suri set up permanent residence in New York as Cruise worked on a film overseas. A divorce settlement was ironed out with lightning speed; Katie Holmes asked for and was almost immediately awarded primary custody of the couple’s six-year-old daughter.

When news of the Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes split first hit the media, Cruise and Holmes, not to mention little Suri, were the subjects of what seemed like every tabloid cover story in the country. The speculation about the divorce and custody details went on for weeks (which still goes on on a smaller scale) and every member of the famous family was put under an even more intensely-magnified microscope than usual.
Tabloid’s Suri Cruise Abandonment Claims Prompts Life & Style Lawsuit
Soon, gossip that Tom Cruise had practically abandoned his daughter, reportedly spending only a few days with Suri over a period of months, began to churn. Some speculated Cruise was keeping his distance not because of a busy filming schedule, but allegedly because Scientology requires him to stay away from Submissive Persons (or S.P.’s). Since the split, Katie Holmes (and Suri by association) was now considered an S.P. by The Church of Scientology.
Cruise’s attorney stated in his statement Wednesday any damages won in the Tom Cruise lawsuit against Life & Style (more specifically, the magazine’s publisher Bauer Publishing Company) will likely be donated to charity.
