When Timothy Drake was a young boy, he was present the night the Flying Graysons were murdered and some years later he saw footage of Batman and Robin apprehending the Penguin, becoming deeply impressed when Robin performed a quadruple somersault, eventually learning Dick Grayson had become Bruce Wayne’s ward and deducing Bruce Wayne had to be Batman with Grayson as Robin. Over time, Tim followed the adventures of the Dynamic Duo and when Nightwing appeared, he deduced that Dick had set out on his own so Tim began considering approaching Bruce Wayne in the hopes of convincing him that Batman needed a Robin and he should be the one to assume the role. In time, Batman started becoming more reckless and dangerous due toJason Todd’s death, which convinced Tim Batman needed a Robin more than ever and he drove himself into action, but Tim patiently waited for the right moment to arrive. Tim saw his chance when he learned Nightwing left the Teen Titans for a short time in order to find himself so Tim followed Dick in order to convince him that Batman needed help and Grayson took him to the Batcave before taking off to help Bruce deal with Two-Face. Alfred Pennyworth insinuated Tim was brought to the cave in order to help out as the new Robin, but when Clayface was on the loose, Tim and Alfred became worried about Dick and Bruce’s safety so they set out to assist them.
Tim donned the Robin costume with the help of Alfred, managing to rescue Dick and Bruce and was put on a trial basis as Robin, training over several months with Alfred, Bruce and then Dick. While on a trip to the Caribbean, Tim’s parents were captured by Obeah Man, with his mother dying during the conflict and his father with paralysis, now requiring care from Dana Winters. Shortly after, Tim assisted Batman in the defeat of the Scarecrow so Bruce finally deemed Tim ready to fulfill his role as Robin and was given a new costume, setting him apart from the previous two. Once deemed the new Robin, Bruce confided in Tim that he wanted someone with smarts as well as confidence and all that’s left is to go through intensive training involving a tour overseas to help Tim understand who he was in addition to learning how to become a great fighter. Tim set off with his first stop being Paris to learn from Rahul Lama and while there, he crossed paths with some thugs working for King Snake who was also being shadowed by Lady Shiva leading to a team-up between her, Tim and a man named Clyde Rawlins in order to take down King Snake’s operation. Lady Shiva’s reasons for joining the team was simply to see if King Snake is a good challenge for her talents and together, the trio discover King Snake was interested in chemical weapons as well as drugs so they followed the trail to Hong Kong all the while training with each other and Robin received his collapsible staff.
King Snake’s plan was to unleash his plague into Hong Kong so the team split up when they breached his layer with Clyde finding Snake first, but was quickly killed. Robin managed to defeat King Snake but he refused to kill him when Shiva ordered him to and upon return to Gotham, took place along Batman’s side. Tim distinguished himself from the first two Robins because he was more reserved in his temperament than Jason and more of a detective than Dick, but less of an acrobat, working rather hard for his acrobatic skill. Tim did however, prove more than capable of holding his own next to Bruce but had more strict orders to disengage and summon help if he came across killers like Two-Face and the Joker. When Bane was in Gotham City and broke everyone out of Arkham Asylum, Tim was the person who figured out the culprit so the dynamic duo set out, making good progress until they were separated after Tim pursued Bird while Batman went after Zsasz. Tim was briefly captured by Bane and Killer Croc, but managed to escape so Bruce sidelined him for a bit while he exhausted himself fighting some of the rogues, but Tim did manage to stop the Riddler when he held a live TV show hostage. When Bruce’s back was broken by Bane, Tim was with Alfred and Jean-Paul Valley so they acquired an ambulance and took Bruce back to the cave, and then Tim called Jim Gordon to acquire some medicine Bruce needed.
Luckily Bruce didn’t die, but rather psychologically scarred and exhausted so Tim sought the help of Dr. Shondra Kinsolving to be his personal physician and wrecked the Porsche as an explanation on how Bruce was so severely injured. After Bruce started feeling better, Tim approached him to discuss the escalation violence in Gotham, suggesting someone would have to step in at Batman until he recovered and rather than asking Dick, Valley stepped in to don the cape and cowl. Tim went on patrols with Valley, but started becoming dismayed when Jean-Paul started becoming more aggressive so Tim continued to try and remind him that there’s more to Batman than just the costume, but it was a little too late. Meanwhile, Bruce also deduced since Bane knew his identity, he must’ve known Tim’s too so when he went to check on Tim’s father, he found that Jack Drake had been kidnapped and Tim finds out later after having major disagreements with Valley. By the time Grayson dropped into the cave, Tim was feeling shut out of the team and filled him in on the situation, also blaming himself, but Dick reassured him that it was not his fault. Later, Tim assisted Valley by saving passengers of an elevated train while Valley defeated Bane, but did not kill him. Shortly after Bane’s defeat, Tim started flying solo due to his fallout with Valley who eventually attacked Tim in the cave.
Due to his role as Robin, Tim continued to put Ariana Dzerchenko at a distance and tried to make it up to her by taking her to the movies, but his mind continued to wander due to the escape of Cluemaster, Electrocutioner and Czonk. Tim began investigating when he ran into Spoiler, who eventually helped Tim stop an armored car robbery after saving his life. Tim later ran into Huntress and helped her with a gang war with Mandy Paulo and came across Deathangel, who was using a pair of pistols to send sinners to God. After a brief firefight, Tim and Huntress split up with Tim in pursuit of Mandy, and Huntress catching up to him later at a church where it’s discovered Deathangel was Mandy’s brother, a priest who is ultimately gunned down by his sister. Eventually Bruce returns to Gotham City after finding Jack Drake and his back is mystically healed so he and Tim break into the Batcave in order to confront Valley who has become even more unstable and Bruce realizes he would have to retake the Batman mantle by force, but knows he would need to return to his physical peak first, which meant visiting Lady Shiva. After Bruce’s training, both Tim and Dick join Bruce to take on Jean-Paul with Bruce ultimately defeating him on his own, putting the dynamic duo together again.
During Zero Hour a young Dick Grayson appeared in the present due to the time crisis, teaming him up with Tim and after the crisis, Bruce took some time off, leaving Dick to assume a temporary position as Batman. The pairing of Dick and Tim proved to be beneficial to the duo as they worked together very well until Bruce’s return, which also led to healing between Dick and Bruce as well as a redesigned costume for the Dark Knight. Shortly after, Tim was involved in a confrontation with KGBeast who was out to destroy Gotham and Tim had to save Harvey Bullock from death, ultimately defeating KGBeast and leaving Bullock in a coma. Later, after a rise in robberies, it was discovered Cluemaster had been sending very weak clues from within Blackgate Penitentiary that relayed to Tim some thugs had taken Stephanie hostage to blackmail the villain to ensure his cooperation. Bruce and Tim arrived at the thugs’ hideout and saved Stephanie and she told the duo that her father was behind the whole plan so Batman went to talk with Cluemaster, later sending Tim and Spoiler to round up the rest of the gang. King Snake then arrived in Gotham to expand his empire, both Tim and Huntress briefly encountered some of his enforcers until Bruce told them to back off and later, Tim stopped a crime spree organized by Ulysses Armstrong and Maxie Zeus.
After a brief encounter with some ninjas, Robin returned his undercover work to find that Ari’s uncle sold his store and they would be moving, but Bruce arranged for Lucius Fox to buy the store in order for her family to buy a store in a better neighborhood and remain in the city, even allowing Ari to attend the same school as Tim. After encountering Killer Moth, Tim met the new Green Arrow who joined him and Spoiler to take down gunrunners selling guns in Tim’s school, which ultimately led to the death of a classmate, Karl. At Karl’s funeral, Tim tried avoiding Stephanie who was also in attendance until they met up to track the guy down responsible for killing Karl, but both were saved by Batman when things got out of hand. Tim was also struck with the Contagion virus whle trying to find a cure, but was eventually healed by Azrael and when returning home. Tim then found Ari had dyed her hair in order to keep his attention but eventually dyed it back without a real reason. After meeting Wildcat and taking down the Speedboyz, Tim meets Impulse while on a ski trip in Colorado and the two became fast friends. After some personal problems with Ari and Ives Tim had a few confrontations with Toyman (Winslow Schott) and Slyfox, before spending time with Ari who wanted to sleep with him, ultimately finding out someone had tried to rape when she had blonde hair and after her uncle catches them, Tim escapes, heading out on patrol.
While out, Tim runs into Spoiler who had been in some trouble with Lynx and the two paired up, but were unsuccessful in taking on Lynx’s Ghost Dragons alone. After learning his friend Ives had been masquerading as a giant mouse at a kid’s restaurant and Ari had been transferred to an all girl’s school, Tim discovered that Spoiler had been kidnapped by Czonk but eventually defeated him (after Czonk knocked himself out) and Tim tells Spoiler she may have to retire. During Genesis, Tim and Dick head to a war-torn country in order to stop two clashing armies and afterward, he had Dick drop him off in Paris to finish his training. Since Rahul Lama was dead, Tim decided to train with the Iron Master and stopped a former student from stealing from the master as well as meeting Dava Sborcs, who was there to learn a single move in order to fight in a war destroying her native country. After Dava leaves, Lady Shiva arrives in search for her with Shiva ultimately killing Iron Master and Tim learns King Snake is selling weapons to Dava’s country so he goes to warn her about Shiva. After finding Dava, Tim learns she is using Aramilla to help her move at super-speed and together, they take down military thugs, but Shiva arrives so he fights with Shiva after using Aramilla and he accidentally kills her due to losing control.
Ultimately, Tim is able to revive Shiva while Dava is fighting King Snake and because of the use of CPR, Shiva absorbs some of the Aramilla, taking down King Snake and his men while Tim brings an injured Dava to safety and ultimately returned to Gotham where Jack, Ari and Spoiler were wondering what happened to him. On the way home, Gotham is struck by a massive earthquake which levels most of the city so Tim returns to join the Bat-Family who was overwhelmed by the catastrophe. Since there was little Tim could do, so he returned to his house to fix the minor damage and then after discovering Ari and Stephanie in shelters, is asked to retrieve Spoiler’s costume, ultimately realizing he cares for her. Both Tim and Ari agree and break things off and he soon becomes a member of Young Justice. After Tim and Stephanie’s first date she confided in him about being pregnant, but was assured it was not his so he persuaded her to give up her alter ego until the baby was born. Due to the devastation of Gotham, both Jack and Tim moved to Keystone City where he teams with the Flash to take on Riddler and Captain Boomerang and the two also received help from Superman to stop a bomb threat. Also while in Keystone, Stephanie gave birth to her child which she gave up for adoption and eventually returned to Gotham in time to help with No Man’s Land.
After returning, Tim and Grayson had to crawl through an extensive system of tunnels and underground chambers, having a run-in with Tommy Mangles and Gearhead but the two were easily defeated by Nightwing and they entered the city. Tim was immediately put to work by tracking down a cache of food from an old shelter and discovered Ratcatcher, having to retreat from him and his legions of rats which gave him a fever from their bites in addition to sewer exposure. After staving off the fever with antibiotics, Tim was found by a group of children known as the Wolflings and had to fight Ratchatcher and Mister Freeze when the group ran into them looking for the food cache. After defeating them, Tim was captured by Killer Croc and after being freed by Alfred, he rallied with Bullock and Penguin to defeat him, and had to eventually tell his father that he was trapped in Gotham. After Jack went to Washington to make it known about his son, Federal agents were ordered to stage a rescue and while at the rescue site, a fire fight broke out, but Tim was successfully extracted with help from Batgirl. After returning, Tim was enlisted in Brentwood Academy and his father insisted that he board at school so he went with Alfred acting as his personal valet for the semester. While there, Tim investigated people who had been transformed into Man-Bats and with the help from Nightwing, learned the Langstroms were the victims, eventually curing all but their child.
Tim usually allied himself with other heroes his age and eventually branched outside Gotham with heroes such as Superman, Flash, Superboy and Impulse. During one mission, Conner, Bart and Tim teamed-up to take down a pre-teen with god-like powers, working so well together, they decided to form Young Justice with Tim acting as team leader until temporarily quitting following Our Worlds at War where the group was tortured on Apokolips and the team no longer trusted him. At the same time, the Justice League discovered Batman had been keeping contingency plans on them so the younger heroes suspected Tim was doing the same. Upon Tim’s return, the team agreed to elect Wonder Girl as their new leader, but disbanded following the death of Donna Troy and eventually found a home with Cyborg, Starfire and Beast Boy as the new Teen Titans with Vic as leader. During Titans Tomorrow, Tim encounters his future self as Batman after Bruce’s death, leading the future Titans and the team has taken control of the entire West Coast, stopping a Dark Raven and hunting down Batman’s rogues gallery, and shooting them with the gun used to kill Thomas and Martha Wayne. After the events of Titans Tomorrow, Jack discovers Tim’s secret identity and gave up the role of Robin in order to protect the others’ identity being revealed by his father and Stephanie took the role for a short time until she was fired by Batman for disobeying orders.
Shortly after, a gang war erupted in Gotham, finding its way into Tim’s school, ultimately forcing him to take the Robin mantle once again and his father realized how important it was to have his son fill the role of hero, but at the end of the story arc, Black Mask captures Stephanie and she is apparently killed. During Identity Crisis, Tim makes an attempt to keep his father safe after attacks on Justice League family members and while out with Bruce investigating the crimes, the two received an incoming transmission from Oracle that Tim’s father needed to speak to him and learned there was an intruder in their house along with a note and gun, instructing Jack to protect himself. After Jack tells Tim how proud of him he is, the intruder turns out to be Captain Boomerang and the two kill one another before the dynamic duo arrive. Following Identity Crisis, Bruce attempts to adopt Tim but instead, he falsifies records to live with an “uncle” in Blüdhaven, but Bruce was able to discover the truth about the uncle. While in Blüdhaven, theVeteran, attempts to recruit Tim so he goes on a mission with him, eventually turning down the offer. Eventually Jason Todd returns as Red Hood and breaks into Titans Tower wearing a version of a Robin costume, immobilizing the other Titans and confronting Tim to see if he’s as good as the rumors. After a fight between the two, Jason defeats Tim but grows respect for him.
During Infinite Crisis, Tim is assisted by the Veteran and his forces to defend Blüdhaven from an army of OMACs and after they’re deactivated, he helped the Shadowpact and the Veteran’s team round up any criminal metahumans. Once Blüdhaven is safe, Wonder Girl arrives to ask Tim for help, joining the Teen Titans along with the Doom Patrol and Justice Society of America in the fight against Superboy-Prime who has violently assaulted Conner. Just after Tim’s departure, Blüdhaven is destroyed by the Society but he continues his efforts in the fight, leading an assault on one of Lex Luthor’s genetic research bases in search of a cure for Conner. After Conner’s death, Tim joins the rest of New Earth’s heroes in the battle against the Society in Metropolis, leaving many casualties so Tim, Dick and Bruce head out on a journey to retrace Bruce’s original journey around the world. After a year, a ceremony is conducted to honor Conner and Tim appears in a new costume made up of red and black to honor his fallen friend. Upon his return, Tim is first to arrive back in Gotham and received a message telling him that if he didn’t return, Batgirl would be killed so he came back to Gotham and moved intoWayne Manor. Shortly after returning, Tim faces off against Violet and met up with Stephanie, who had not really died rather hid out in Africa with Dr. Thompkins. Tim and Stephanie maintained order in Gotham until Bruce returned.
In Battle for the Cowl, Tim and Nightwing continue to keep the streets of Gotham safe and when Tim arrives to track down a group of robbers with Squire, an unknown person had already taken them out, leaving a note that said, “I am Batman,” and upon return to the cave, Tim stated that one of them needed to become the new Batman. Eventually Tim donned an older Batman suit after tracking down the Batman imposter and discovered it to be Jason Todd with Catwoman following Tim, but she was incapacitated by Jason while Tim was lured to a pit and left to die after being stabbed in the gut. Just before Jason’s hideout was blown up, Tim was rescued by Damian Wayne and Squire who were sent by Dick and Tim ultimately abandoned the Batman costume. After Dick assumed the role of Batman, Tim retired as Robin and Damian took his place so Tim told Stephanie he would be leaving Gotham for a bit. Its later discovered that Stephanie was hired by Bruce to make Tim a better Robin but when a plot spiraled out of control, she ended up siding against Tim and his head injured in a battle with Scarab, forcing him to wear a Red Robin costume to cover it up and defeated Anarky with his new persona. From this point, Tim began travelling the world in search of Bruce Wayne and was continuously monitored by Ra’s al Ghul, who was interested in Tim and his quest for Bruce.
The quest eventually led Tim to a cave wall in Iraq with a bat insignia drawn on it but both Tim and Ra’s found themselves targeted by the Council of Spiders and Tim was saved by the League of Assassins in exchange for help in tracking down the Council. During his quest to find Bruce, Tim had to return to Gotham when Dick informed him about the graves of his parents being desecrated, which was later revealed they had been reanimated as Black Lanterns and eventually Dick used one of Mr. Freeze’s gun to cryogenically suspend him and Tim, forcing the Lanterns to retreat since they are unable to read any sign of life from them and were later revived by Deadman. After Blackest Night, Tim used the opportunity of his alliance with Ra’s to destroy his worldwide computer network as well as defeat the Council of Spiders and later reunited with Conner in Paris while in search for a Mother Box in order to get to New Genesis. After his encounter with Conner, Tim returned to Gotham with proof the original Batman is alive and lost in time, but at the same time, Ra’s begins his attack to destroy everything the Wayne Family built in response to Tim crippling his League. When Tim returns to the Batcave to seek Dick’s aid, he encounters Stephanie as the new Batgirl and after a brief confrontation, the two work together in order to protect Ra’s targets, saving Leslie Thompkins in the process.
Prudence arrives and shortly after she is defeated by Stephanie, she reveals her alliance with Tim just before narrowly escaping Tim’s booby-trapped safe house and cornered by the Men of Death, in which they were nearly killed but managed to escape. At this point, Tim learns he is named as Bruce’s heir in accordance of his will, ultimately making him CEO of Wayne Enterprises. After disrupting Ra’s plans, Tim is met by Ra’s himself who calls him detective before kicking him off a high-rise in which he is saved by Batman. After recovering from Ra’s attack, Tim sets out to take down several of the Batman Family’s current foes starting with the new Lynx and enlists the help of Lonnie Machin until Bruce returns to enlist him in the fight against the Council of Spiders. After their defeat, Bruce establishes Batman Incorporated and Tim heads to Hong Kong to contact Cassandra Cain to join the cause but she declines and upon returning to Gotham, springs Lynx from prison who claimed to be an undercover Hong Kong Police Officer. Bruce was mildly annoyed but offered advice and later, Tim set out to investigate the Unternet by traveling to Russia with Tam Fox and met by Red Star. Soon after, Promise appeared to attack Viktor Mikalek and after her escape, Tim tracked her to her hideout where Red Star mistakenly attacked Tim but eventually took the Unternet out.
After an attack on Tam’s life, Tim set out to seek aid from the Teen Titans in order to track down the Calculator and they set out to Istanbul to find his base of operations, using Damian to draw out a Calculator android and following it to a nightclub. After defeating a slew of androids, the team track Calculator down who deploys more robots to take them down, later realizing Calculator himself was an android and eventually leading to Damian to quit the team. Eventually Azrael returns to Gotham where he meets the Crusader who claims the city is drenched in sin and suggests Dick, Tim and Selina are summoned by God, believing they should be tested individually to see if there’s a worthy enough soul to have Gotham spared from God’s wrath meanwhile, Ra’s charges Fireball full of enough solar energy to level Gotham. Tim is the first to be tested and as Azrael holds the mayor captive, the Crusader endangers countless civilians on Tim’s path to save the mayor and since Tim is not willing to sacrifice any lives, he is judged with the Sword of Sin, but just before the city is spared, the Crusader claims he did not honor God while saving people trapped inside a burning church so he was deemed unworthy. After Judgment on Gotham, comes 7 Days of Death and then following the events of Flashpoint, the DC Universe alters into the DCnU.
Tim has been in a state of semi-retirement after his falling out with Batman, using his computer skills to fight crime similar to Oracle’s role. After being attacked by agents of N.O.W.H.E.R.E., Tim dons a new suit and returns to crime-fighting, forming the Teen Titans and finding he is falling for Wonder Girl. Tim stays at Cassie’s house for awhile until he hears about Skitter and after realizing N.O.W.H.E.R.E. is hunter her, he sneaks into the sewers but is confronted by Thrice and eventually defeats the metahuman until he disappears and tracks him in combat with Skitter. Tim tries to convince he is trying to help, but Skitter strikes at him with Cassie just in time to save Tim and knock her out. Elsewhere Bart escapes with Solstice who was trapped in a holding cell and Bunker sneaks onto a cargo train heading for the United States, where he meets Tim who has been posing as a hobo and when the train stops, the two notice a number of people from a nearby town approaching them while under mind control. Tim heads off to try and shut off the source but is met by Detritus who replaces his memories. After he returns Tim to the train, the cocoon that was in the car with them hatches and Skitter emerges as a human. Back in New York, Cassie is being tracked by Conner who has been tasked with eliminating her while Tim explains the dangers of the organization of N.O.W.H.E.R.E. when they are interrupted by Bart and Solstice who are on the run and they treat the duo’s hypothermia.
As Tim is talking to Bart, the group of teens witness Cassie fighting Conner on a television in Times Square and just as Conner defeats Cassie, the Teen Titans arrive but are immediately sent flying from Conner’s telekinesis and after a long battle, Conner retreats with second thoughts on his loyalty to N.O.W.H.E.R.E. The Titans are then surrounded by police officers and also have to face Skitter who has lost control again but Bunker is able to get through to her and the fighting ceases. After the fight, the team takes Bart to S.T.A.R. Labs to tend to his condition while Cassie and Bunker track Skitter, eventually bringing her back and Bart is given a new uniform that has the ability to keep his molecules aligned. Back at N.O.W.H.E.R.E., Conner is captured with plans to extract information from him before starting over, but Bart arrives in time with the Titans trailing and frees Conner while Cassie defeats Ravager and then faces Zaniel Templar. Elsewhere in the facility, Tim hacks records but is interrupted by Solstice and explains rather than helping the team, he is gathering information about kids trapped by the organization and then meets up with the team to face Harvest and Tim is captured by Omen. The other Titans begin to fight amongst themselves as Bunker tries to prevent Cassie from rescuing Tim and Solstice warns they must remain united, but the entire team aside from Bart is taken prisoner by The Culling on an island populated by prehistoric creatures. After an escaping creature trying to eat him, Bart finds Tim and tries to explain what happened but Tim is in disbelief.
On the other side of the island, Conner and Cassie find a trap door leading to where Bart had an encounter with one of the creatures and sets it free while Tim sets off on his own leaving Bart, Solstice and Bunker (who later catches up to him) behind. Eventually Cassie and Conner find the rest of the team, and after some time on the island, manage to escape and appear in an alley. Later, Cassie begins struggling with the armor that gives her power and a man named Diesel finds out her location after months of searching. That same evening, the lights go out at Titans Tower and part of the team is attacked by Cassie who it being controlled by her armor. Both Tim and Conner arrive and manage to separate her from it, saving Cassie but the two are affected by the paralytic gas deployed by Diesel who then takes the armor so the three set off to track him down. This leads into the Teen Titans #13 which went on sale in October, 2012.
Tim possesses no known superhuman powers but it has been suggested he has beyond a normal mental concentration and focus ability, allowing him to think and calculate beyond most humans. Tim also possesses peak level strength, stamina, speed, reflexes and agility for a teen, but since he’s not fully grown, his condition should rise as he ages. Tim has mastered multiple martial arts but his most preferred method of combat is stick fighting while also incorporating fighting aspects of Lady Shiva, Batman, Nightwing and Connor Hawk. His naturally high intellect also allows Tim to excel in computer science and detective skills and he also has a firm grasp of assorted scientific techniques to include biology, engineering and genetics. Bruce Wayne has stated Tim could potentially be smarter and better than the Dark Knight himself.
