Residents of Western Queens, particularly those located in Long Island City, are welcome to offer volunteer services towards hurricane relief at the following shelters:
- Newcomers High School, 28-01 41st Avenue, Queens
- Aviation High School, 45-30 36th Street, Queens
- W.C. Bryant High School, 48-10 31st Avenue, Queens
Besides this, you can also receive information about volunteer opportunities throughout the rest of the city by emailing your name, phone number, email address and borough to email@example.com. As more opportunities arise, you will be contacted.
Schools will remain closed both today and tomorrow, however Queens library branches will begin reopening tomorrow.
*Note: The following events listed below are for future reference only. Due to Hurricane Sandy, most of these events may not be running this weekend. All these programs however are ongoing, which means even if they are cancelled for this weekend, they may continue on for the rest of November and even beyond. Free hands-on kids workshops at Home Depot: Nov. 3 from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
Description: For the 1st Saturday of every month, every Home Depot store will hold special kids’ workshops, in which they’ll teach about tool safety and basic do-it-yourself skills. All kids get to keep their crafts, as well as receive a free kids’ workshop apron, commemorative pin, and certificate of achievement.

Art & Story time workshops: Nov. 3 from 11-11:45 a.m.
Description: This is a special workshop for toddlers and preschoolers to engage in. Classes will take place every Saturday beginning Nov. 3, and class fees will include all workshop supplies and other bonuses. Registration is required.

Pirate Pete’s Parrot at the Secret Theater: Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.
Description: Have your family join Pirate Pete as he embarks on a musical journey towards trying to find his beloved parrot Polly, who loves pancakes instead of birdseed. Tickets can be purchased online. Performance is held every two weeks, which means the next showing of Pirate Pete’s Parrot will be held on Nov. 17, 2012.

Art for Tots-Tools and Toys at the Noguchi Museum: Nov. 3 at 10:30 a.m.
Description: Families with young children can come explore the museum together and then engage in hands-on activities. Program is conducted in Japanese and advance registration is required, which can be done online. Class is held every two weeks, which means the next class will be held on Nov. 17, 2012.

Time Warner Cable Customer Days at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum: Beginning Nov. 3 from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
Description: During the entire month of November, Time Warner Cable will be offering its customers from both NYC and NJ exclusive discounts towards visiting the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum. TWC subscribers are welcome to visit the museum any Saturday this November, which are known as Time Warner Cable Customer days and include Nov. 3, 10, 17, and 24. There they can view for the first time the Space shuttle Enterprise, which has been on display at the Intrepid’s Space Shuttle Pavilion since July 19, 2012.
Customers must show their current bill statements to the Intrepid Museum ticket office first before becoming eligible for the various discounts available, including “buy one, get one free” ticket deals. These deals include receiving a free Adult, Child, or Senior general admission ticket after the purchase of a full-priced Adult ticket. In addition, TWC customers will receive special discounts off the museum’s simulator rides as well as off all purchases from its gift store.
