The following article is part of an ongoing effort to help homeless dogs in and around the Toronto/Hamilton area find suitable and loving homes. Currently, the need is great but the homes are few. Your help is desperately needed.
Ugly Mutts Ontario Humane Dog Rescue located in Hamilton, Ontario recently took in a Shih Tzu./Poodle mix named Oliver.
Oliver is approximately 6 years old and weighs under 15 lbs. According to rescue staff, he is “an amazing companion. He is a very gentle, low-key little man that just wants to be with his people and be loved.”
Oliver arrived in quite a neglected state – underweight and badly matted – but since being cared for by a foster family, he is “making a total turn around and is now happy, freshly groomed and ready to find his new family. When he arrived at the rescue, he was so matted that he had to be shaved right down and due to previous neglect, he had some dry, patchy skin, which is now clearing up.
“His deep brown eyes look at you as if to say, ‘I have a story to tell you,’” said his foster parent. “If only Oliver could talk, his story would be a sad one by the condition he arrived in but his eagerness to be around you tells you he is full of hope for the future.”
Since his arrival, Oliver has proved to be a wonderful companion. He never begs or steals food and does not seem interested in chewing or toys.
“Oliver is a gentle, loving, low energy little dog that just loves to curl up beside you on the couch and shower you with kisses. He prefers to snuggle under the pillows on the couch to hide his head and fall asleep. If you are in another room, he will come lay at your feet just to be near you,” said his foster parent. He is a “happy, friendly and loving puppy, who just wants to be loved and cared for. He loves to spend time with his people having his belly rubbed and will climb right up to you to give you kisses of appreciation.”
He is happy to follow other dogs when they go for a walk and “tends to take cues from them on what to do. He is good on a leash but prefers to “stroll along sniffing everything along the way.
“Oliver does seem to have had an injury that is still apparent from the slight off-kilter walk. This might disappear over time, as it has improved in the past few weeks.
He is also good in a car and will lie down quietly.
“Oliver is a low energy dog but after getting to know us, he exhibits these short bursts of playfulness where he will do a little circle dance in front of you. He is becoming more confident in his new surroundings and is showing his cute personality.”
His foster parent said Oliver does not know many commands but does respond well if treats are offered.
“We are working on basic house training and giving Oliver regular outside time to do his business. He is improving quickly with the use of treats as rewards for going outside. Oliver would make a wonderful companion to an older retired couple, who would be home much of the time not only to give Oliver the love and attention he craves but also the patience and understanding to complete his house training. Oliver would also suit a family with other small dogs for companionship while his people are out and older children that would be able to give him love and attention.”
This cutie is neutered and up-to-date on his routine shots. If you think Oliver would be a good addition to your home, go to Ugly Mutts and submit an application form for consideration. You will find the form HERE. Send the application to firstname.lastname@example.org and put ‘Pet Inquiry: Oliver PFId232442’ in the subject line.
