Our love of the spellbinding underwater world draws us to the deep depths every chance that we get to frolic among the fish and relax and enjoy the scenery from colorful corals to curious fish of all sizes.
But unfortunately, we aren’t always able to translate that desire into action due to other priorities and daily responsibilities.
Now when you can’t make it for morning or an afternoon of scuba diving, the marine world will come to you. It is called theBlu.com and it is a new gamelike social app that gives users the ability to download an animated 3-D version of the ocean.
As you jump into the screen, you can swim on the lifelike reefs and see all kinds of fish, even sharks and turtles. It is always important to dive with a buddy and through this app you can connect with other users and explore geo-located habitats. It is almost as if you are captivated by one of your favorite dive sites and yet you have not left your desk. Users are able to create their own account or enter the site as a guest.
As you spot new species of fish and tag them, you finish a set. For every set that you finish, you can choose one fish and add to your collection. But if one fish isn’t enough, collect more by purchasing them at the app store.
What makes this even more meaningful is that each time you purchase a fish, it is attached to a nonprofit ocean group such as Mission Blue, Ocean Elders and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Start with 100 credits and then buy more; $3 for 20 credits and as much as 5,000 credits for $250. A $19.99 Pro version of the app adds more species and habitats.
Each time you connect to another user, you get social points (click on their fish). Incentive is to build 500 social points and then become awarded with credits for buying fish and entry to habitats. Also by clicking on a fish, you are able to see its designers and programmers and species information for the intrigued.
The initial download is free but if you want to buy species and habitats, that is extra and a portion of these proceeds goes to support ocean conservation efforts that will help to work towards maintaining our beautiful oceans. As Ted Danson says about this new app, “Our oceans face a crisis. While beauty remains, overfishing, pollution and habitat destruction threaten whole species and ecosystems. I’m intrigued by the potential of theBlu as an Internet tool to protect the oceans.”
theBlu.com has versions for Windows and the Mac. Try this virtual experience for yourself and enjoy the deep blue sea and all its marine life.
