The State Line Amateur Tour Championship began on Friday at Falcon Ridge Golf Course in Lenexa, Kan. Falcon Ridge is an 18-hole championship course that measures from 5,160 yards on the forward tees to 6,820 yards from the black tees.
In the Open Division Gross Scoring Ben Kimminau of Raymore, Mo. was the overnight leader with a three under par 69. Kimminau made bogey on three and five, but countered with birdies on four, six, eight and nine to go out in 34 and then made birdie on 17. In second was Stan Wiehe of Kansas City, Kan. who had made bogey on four and then made birdies on three of the remaining holes. Craig Broswick of Lee’s Summit, Mo. finished in third with an even par round of 72. Kimminau remained in first place in the net scoring with an even par round of 72 and in a tie with Joshua Doss of Smithville, Mo. Stan Wiehe moved to third place in net scoring.
Jeff Hanson of Olathe, Kan. held the overnight lead in the Players Division Gross Scoring with a one over par 73. Hanson made four bogies and three pars to finish the opening round in first place. Lawrence, Kan. resident Michael Buckhouse finished two back of Hanson with a 75. Third place was held by David Levenhagen of Shawnee, Kan. with a four over par 76. Net scoring in the Players Division went to David Levenhagen with a six under par 66. Scott Conner of Lee’s Summit, Mo. stood in second with a five under par 67 and Matt Gordon was one shot back from Conner for third.
The Senior Division Gross Scoring ended with only one player under par in round one. Steve Groom of Raytown, Mo. made three bogies and five birdies to finish at two under par 70. After round one Kevin Handlan of Leawood, Kan. and Chuck Admire of Kansas City, Mo. were tied for second with a one over par 73. Round one of net scoring ended in a three way tie between Groom, Admire and Ed Walsworth of Kansas City, Mo. with even par rounds of 72.
At even par for round one David Rhodes of Olathe, Kan. was the overnight leader of the championship. Rhodes posted four birdies and two double bogies for the 18 holes. Round one ended with a tie for second between Mitch Bowen from Overland Park, Kan. and Lee’s Summit, Mo. resident Bob Ginther with one over par rounds of 73. Ginther moved to first place in net scoring with a five under par 67. Jack Garvin from Overland Park, Kan. and Steve Frisbie of Olathe, Kan. finished round one tied for second with three under par 69.
The championship continued with round two at Falcon Ridge on Saturday morning.
