The story of the NYC nanny stabbing has people riveted across the country as new details emerge. The story broke Thursday after nanny Yoselyn Ortega allegedly stabbed two children in her care to death, and stabbed herself as the children’s mother returned to the New York City apartment. The police are still investigating the tragic incident, and Ortega remains in critical condition. New details shared Saturday, Oct. 27 by CNN and ABC News show that there is a lot yet to be learned about what led to this heartbreaking tragedy.
CNN has learned that one neighbor in the apartment building saw Yoselyn Ortega, also called “Josie,” with the two children less than an hour before the killing. The neighbor, Charlotte Friedman, says, “I told the little girl ‘do you know how beautiful you are?’ and she gave me the biggest smile I’ve ever seen and said ‘thank you.’” Friedman told CNN that nothing seemed wrong with the nanny, and just a while later she was back in the elevator to go run errands when she heard a “primal scream” in the building. She notes that it was a scream of “pure terror,” and though she isn’t sure who screamed, it seems likely it was the mother of the children, Marina Krim.
Friends and relatives of the NYC nanny stabbing suspect say that they don’t understand what happened, but Yoselyn had not been herself lately. They tell ABC News that Ortega seemed to have been struggling both financially and emotionally over the past month or so. Even so, they are shocked that Ortega would do such a thing to the children she’d worked with since the little boy, Leo, was born.
A driver that had rented a room from the family some time ago said that Ortega’s sister told him Friday that Yoselyn had been taken to a psychologist recently for help. So far there seems to be no significant history of mental health issues in Yoselyn Ortega’s background. Other friends say that she had recently had to give up her Bronx apartment and move in with her sister. A neighbor noted that lately she seemed to have lost weight and rapidly aged.
By all accounts, the family and the nanny had been quite close, as the Krim family had even traveled to the Dominican Republic earlier this year and visited Ortega’s family. It is said, understandably, that Marina and Kevin Krim are devastated by the shocking and brutal deaths of their young children, Lucia and Leo. The NYC nanny stabbing suspect is at the Weill Cornell Medical Center and is heavily sedated. She is also breathing with the aid of a tube and at this time is unable to speak.
Many are following this case closely and will be interested to see if any information regarding what set off the NYC nanny stabbing suspect can be uncovered. No matter what prompted Yoselyn Ortega to stab Lucia and Leo, the parents and extended family will surely be struggling to accept this unimaginable tragedy.
