Once again a Mentalist season finale left viewers on a cliffhanger with the Red John plot line, waiting all summer to find out what happens. This time it was Patrick Jane being approached by an accomplice of red John, Lorelei, who makes Red John’s offer for Jane to become one of his accomplices. First he has to prove he is ready by killing Agent Lisbon. Instead Jane concocts a plan to fake Lisbon’s death and trick Red John into meeting him for the evidence. Agent Darcy from the FBI finds out first, and Red John finds out from his mole at the FBI. All of this leads to the FBI getting in the way of the CBI team’s investigation which leads Red John to get away once again leaving a wave of destruction in his wake including the death of Agent Wainwright. They did manage to arrest Lorelei.
The season premiere mainly focuses on Jane and Lorelei. Jane finally gets a chance to interrogate Lorelei and Lisbon listens in even after Jane told her not to. Lisbon stood by her decision stating that Jane is too close to Lorelei since he slept with her before she revealed that she was Red John’s accomplice. Some of her anger may have stemmed from a few comments she secretly overheard in the interview such as Jane’s slightly scornful answer to Lorelei declaration that Jane is in love with Lisbon or and that Jane granted Lorelei’s request for a kiss. Jane of course insisted that he did this all in order to build his rapport with Lorelei to eventually crack her into revealing information on Red John.
The FBI, who has been continually claiming their right to the custody of Lorelei, finally gets their wish granted by a judge which Jane convinces CBI director Bertram to reverse. However, in the last scene when Lisbon and Jane arrive at the jail to take Lorelei back into their custody, the prison guards present them with a completely different woman who has been given Lorelei’s identity.
The real Lorelei’s fate is left open to speculation for now. Most likely she was taken back by Red John or his accomplices either to protect her or to kill her. It is noteworthy that in the past anyone the CBI or FBI have caught who has information on Red John has been killed almost instantly with no cover-up.
The season premiere did not give The Mentalist audience many answers; instead it raised a few new questions. If viewers were thinking Jane would crack a devoted accomplice of red John in one episode then they were sorely disappointed. She gave up no information and in addition Jane lost future chances at interrogation when she disappeared. Like in past seasons, it will probably be a little while before we hear more on the trail of Red John. All in all it was not the most eventful episode of the show, but it was a good start to the season with a lot of teases for the viewers in regards to the Jane-Lisbon relationship.
The sneak peek of the next episode shown immediately after the season premiere ended created a more gripping desire to tune in next week. From the glimpses given, it appears Jane may be institutionalized or possibly have some sort of vision in which he meets a girl claiming to be his daughter.
