It is an interesting question, who has caused the shutdown of the US government? In Springfield or around the country you receive three answers. Republicans blame the Democrats including the President. Democrats blame the Republicans. Those who are not Republican or Democrat are blaming both parties. This number of independent or non-partisan Americans is growing every day. These numbers are not affected by whether you are a Christian or not. Everyone is frustrated with the Congress and the President.
Gallup does a monthly pole to measure the percentages of Republican, Democrat or Independent voters. The September pole shows 47% are now Independent. This number is up from 38% in January and is the highest that Gallup records on their website.
On Wednesday night at midnight, this shutdown would have intensified and been more devastating for the economy if the Congress and President had not agreed on a way to continue borrowing money. Why do the Democrats and Republicans never talk about a balanced budget anymore. The debt limit would not have to be increased if we did that. We have to at least balance the budget to be able to reduce the national debt.
The solution to the government shutdown and extension of our ability to pay the bills is short term. We may go through all of this again early next year.
Time is not on the side of the American population. This needs to be remembered when election time comes in 2014 and 2016. Now is the time to decide not to support any candidate that aligns themselves with a political party. Non-partisan representatives would still disagree, but would not split on party lines. They might choose sides geographically or due to political views. That would have to be better than what we have now.
