Punk riffs, funky ska beats and gravelly vocals can mean only one thing, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones are back in town. During the late 80’s and 90’s the Boston band spearheaded the rebirth of ska with their multi-layered musical sounds which walked a thin line between the melodic classic ska sounds and angry hard core punk, thus spawning ‘ska-core’. They quickly became known for their high-octane shows that leaned more towards punk, but as ska become more mainstream so did their music. The vicious guitars and violent drums were toned back, just a bit, with the horn section and ska flavored beats became more prominent as they sky rocketed in popularity. Since music seems to be cyclical, the ska boom quickly became over saturated, and like many other bands, the Bosstones popularity waned. After a brief break from each other with members doing their own things from music to TV to becoming a pilot, the Bosstones have regrouped. With the hiatus behind them they are back and better than ever, unleashing an album full of new tunes and setting out on tour bringing their music to the devout fans and possibly winning over some younger ones along the way.
This Saturday, November 3rd, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ whirlwind tour rolls into Atlanta as they bring the ska-core to the Masquerade. The upstairs room will be packed with rowdy fans jacked up on the hard core riffs and dancing to the funky beats as the whiskey soaked smoke ravaged vocals of Dickey Barrett explodes from the speakers. While supporting their latest record The Magic Of Youth look for a set list that covers their vast back catalog of tunes as well as the new stuff. Expect to hear classic tunes such as “Someday I Suppose”, “Don’t Know How To Party” and “Where’d You Go” from their earlier days mixed with popular tunes such as “Impressions That I Get”, “Rascal King” and “Kinder Words” that highlighted their rapid rise in popularity. With a plethora of tunes to choose from there should be something for everybody during the show.
If you are looking for something to do this weekend you can’t go wrong with the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The Masquerade will be rocking, the cold beer will be flowing and the Bosstones will be supplying the music. What else are you going to do this Saturday, go see Flock of Seagulls, catch a movie or stay at home and watch TV? Yeah I didn’t think so.
