As expected, “The Avengers” easily took the No. 1 spot for movies on demand from October 1 to October 7, 2012, according to Rentrak. The all-star superhero flick is the biggest box-office hit of 2012 and has been getting rave reviews from critics. “The Avengers” is currently No. 3 in the list of biggest box-office movies worldwide of all time, behind only “Avatar” (No. 1) and “Titanic” (No. 2), according to Box Office Mojo. In “The Avengers,” several superheroes gather to do battle against an evil Norse god named Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) that has assembled an army of space aliens to help him take over modern-day Earth. The ensemble “Avengers” cast also includes Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Evans as Stever Rogers/Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor (Loki is Thor’s adopted brother), Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Naturally, an “Avengers” movie sequel has been already announced by Marvel Studios. “The Avengers 2” will be released on May 1, 2015.
Dropping from No. 1 to No. 2 is “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which is proving to be more popular with movie consumers than with film critics. Based loosely on the Snow White fairly tale, the film got mostly negative reviews when it was released in the U.S. on June 1, 2012. More recently, the movie also got publicity for the cheating scandal of Kristen Stewart (who plays Snow White) and “Snow White and the Huntsman” director Rupert Sanders (who is married with two kids) having an affair. Paparazzi photos exposed the affair in July 2012. Stewart and Sanders issued separate apologies to the people hurt by the scandal, and they have reportedly been trying to repair their relationships with their significant others. Stewart’s longtime boyfriend Robert Pattinson broke up with her after her infidelity was made public but they have now reportedly reconciled. A sequel to “Snow White and the Huntsman” is being planned. Stewart and Chris Hemsworth (who plays the Huntsman) are expected to return for the sequel. Sanders presumably won’t be directing it.
Hemsworth is also a star of “The Cabin in the Woods,” the No. 3 movie in the week’s Top 5 movies on demand. He made the movie back in 2009, two years before the release of his 2011 breakout movie, “Thor.” Problems with distribution and financing delayed the release of this horror flick, which was co-written and produced by Joss Whedon, who would go on to direct Hemsworth in the 2012 blockbuster “The Avengers.” “The Cabin in the Woods” got mixed-to-good reviews from critics, who noted that the film’s originality made up for its flaws. The movie was a modest hit at the box office.
“What to Expect When You’re Expecting” had an all-star ensemble (including Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Rock) that could not save this comedy film about expectant parents from having dismal box-office sales and bad reviews. However, based on its No. 4 ranking this week for movies on demand, more people seem willing to watch the movie at home than in theaters.
“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” was a sleeper hit during the spring of 2012. The drama about British retirees who stay at a run-down hotel in India, had a lot of staying power in movie theaters, largely because of positive word of mouth. Although the film was in limited release in movie theaters, the per-screen-average was better than most films released around the same time. Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Dev Patel and Maggie Smith are among the stars of the movie, which is ranked at No. 5 this week.
Here are the Top 5 movies on demand for the week ending October 6, 2012:
1. The Avengers (debut)
2. Snow White and the Huntsman (No. 1 in the previous week)
3. The Cabin in the Woods (No. 2 in the previous week)
4. What to Expect When You’re Expecting (No. 3 in the previous week)
5. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (No. 4 in the previous week)
