The Apartment Book by Carol Spier is our first review even though this book came to us in an updated edition, a hardback–and for good reason. The subtitle is “Smart Decorating for Any Room—Large or Small”. Obviously this scope takes in a lot more territory than apartments, but it has surely earned the title ‘Smart Decorating’ because in this volume, it provides ideas for any décor.
“…it has surely earned the title ‘Smart Decorating’.
The Apartment Book is arranged room-by-room in six chapters such as, Living Rooms, Dining Rooms, etc. It also has real life before-and-after pictures, a favorite with us. That being said, the author acknowledges that apartment dwellers have unique issues: their closeness to a neighbor’s noise and, most likely a certain lack of privacy, limited exterior walls, shared mechanical, public spaces and more. That’s why there are a list of basic questions as to: what you expect to do? how long you plan on being there? and what types of changes you desire? along with the challenges for those changes.
“‘Turn your apartment into a home’ is the directive…”
Turning your apartment into a home is the directive and the author provides ideas, plus lots of photographs, special features for problem solving, sidebar tips and inspiration. The book also suggests that you be open to possibilities and not be dismissive because of a room’s color for example.
Included inside are also steps such as: Choose a style, Focus your layout (…‘there is more than one way to arrange furniture’), Traffic flow, Grouping tips, and Lighting suggestions abound. Included are some neat color tricks like: ‘add colored lampshades’, use a ‘rug to ground the space or add depth’, go for colorful slipcovers, and more.
One good suggestion we liked is: ‘Unskirted furniture gives an illusion of depth. Skirted furniture closes off a space.”
Other helpful sidebars are: “10 Rules For Hanging Artwork”; “12 Tricks That Make Your Space Look Larger”, etc.
I was impressed with the many clever arrangements for one-room apartment living—a real challenge to create life all in one space—it’s really a valid lesson in space planning. End result. This is a book that will provide the reader many endless hours of ideas and inspiration.
