Teen Mom is an MTV reality show that portrays pregnant teens in America. It is also a spin off from the show 16 and Pregnant. Teen Mom premiered on the MTV television channel on December 8, 2009, and has been widely watched by many teenagers across America.
Teenage pregnancy has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade, and this has more negative than positive influences in a teenager’s life. Children having children has become a phenomena that has seen more grandparents actually raising their grandchildren than the parents themselves. The average teenager does not have the fully developed psychological capacity to undertake raising a child let alone caring for themselves.
Both 16 and Pregnant as well as Teen Mom are reality shows that reveal the many challenges that young mothers face with teen pregnancies. Some of these pregnant teens have the desire to get married or hold onto the relationship with the baby’s father, but this is something that rarely works out positively. Not only do the young mothers have to deal with the challenge of being a mother at such an early age, but they also have to face the reality of finishing high school, finding employment, moving out on their own, and the possibility of college in the future.
In today’s society, there is a more lenient view of unmarried, pregnant women, and these reality shows provide insight to young couples nationwide on the pro’s and con’s of having unprotected sex early in life. Children are a wonderful gift in life, but there are so many other factors to consider with having children at any age. Long lasting relationships and marriages of yesterday aren’t the norm of today. There needs to be more awareness of how teen pregnancy can hinder rather than promote a teenagers growth into adulthood. Adoption is not only another option, but also a wonderful gift to many women who cannot have children of their own.
Another huge factor with teen pregnancy is the financial aspect of the situation. Children cost money, and this can become a huge burden on the teenager and their family. Abstinence is the most likely answer for teenagers who are still trying to discover who they are in the world. It is the healthier choice that will also show that the teenager respects themselves as well as their bodies. Children are an element in life that should come after the teenager has had time to grow into an independent adult one day. Young adults who take the time to focus on becoming independent, finishing high school, college, and finding employment are better situated with providing for a family rather than the teenager who isn’t able to have those same benefits in life.
Pregnancies do happen with some teenagers, and those who face the challenge should be given the opportunity to prosper wherever possible in order to be a good provider for their child. Prostitution, legal issues, and drugs, are just some of the negative possibilities that could occur to the teenager who has a child early in life with no way to support and/or raise the child. There will always be those individual predators out there in society who look for young adults in such positions in order to place bad influences in their life. More sex education and parenting information should be made readily available for high school students and young adults nationwide. The importance of prevention isn’t just about teen pregnancies, but also with sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s). Abstinence may not be popular with a lot of teenagers today, but it is something that could end up saving a life.
