During Spooky Empire’s May-Hem earlier this year, I asked Petey Mongelli about the move from the Wyndham Orlando Resort to the Hilton Orlando. Petey replied, “We’re moving from the minors to the major leagues.” I didn’t quite know what he meant until I arrived at the Hilton for day 1 of Spooky Empire’s Ultimate Horror Weekend yesterday. For starters, it is a beautiful hotel. “They have much nicer rooms,” commented Kane Hodder, best known for playing Jason in four Friday the 13th movies and more recently Victor Crowley in the Hatchet movies. Later in the evening the hotel had a staff member working near the elevators offering guests, who choose to dress up in Halloween makeup, a washcloth to help wipe the makeup off their faces. Now that’s high class!
Instead of having to walk from a separate building to get to the venue like we had to at the Wyndham, now all guests have to do is take a simple elevator and escalator ride. Spooky Empire has grown so huge over the years and the old hotel was beginning to feel a little confined. Now we have a place big enough to properly hold everything. The dealer room is larger than ever and all the celebrities are together in one room rather than two to three smaller ones.
Speaking of celebrities, Robert Englund aka Freddy Kruger had a huge line for his autograph. Sid Haig was very popular too. There are so many great guests this year. Ken Foree (“Dawn of the Dead”, “Halloween”) was cool as a cucumber, Chris Sarandon, Traci Lords, Tom Savini and many others were all very gracious with the fans. Today, for day 2 and day 3, Rose McGowan will be on hand. To see a list of all guest celebrities, click HERE.
Day 1 started with the traditional zombie walk. Besides the celebrities and vendor room, guests found that the tattoo room, Mucklebones Monster Museum and the Freakshow Horror Film Festival all had much bigger and nicer rooms to showcase in. There were a few bumps in the road. The Rob Zombie/Marilyn Manson concert was canceled earlier that evening which affected the after party Spooky Empire was hosting and some folks were missing the traditional pool party as opposed to the Courtyard where they were last night. However, overall it was apparent people were having a wonderful time.
There is still plenty going on at Spooky Empire. There are some great Q&As scheduled, including with Rose McGowan and ones with the casts of “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4” and “The Devil’s Rejects”. There are also some interesting seminars taking place, great live music and a celebrity poker tournament. A Saturday ticket is $35 and a Sunday one is $30. The price includes admission to the entire venue, click HERE for more information.
Halloween is only days away and if you are a fan of horror then Spooky Empire’s Ultimate Horror Weekend is the place to be! No matter how far away you may be, it is worth the trip. Hope to see you here.
