If you thought you could predict the Season 9 winners of the hit dance competition “So You Think You Can Dance,” you might have been correct. But chances are, you would have been dead wrong with at least one of your choices, because even that particular winner was shocked to hear their name spoken at show’s end. As it was, going into the finale, Tiffany Maher and Eliana Girard were vying for “Favorite Female Dancer” while Cyrus Spencer and Chehon Wespi-Tschopp competed for “Favorite Male Dancer.”
The “SYTYCD” results finale was a festive, fun-filled evening for most, except for perhaps Top 4 finalist Tiffany. Not only did she seem to be sporting a bruise on her forehead, but she was constantly on the floor. So it was more like work for the young dancer as she performed in one of the six favorited dances chosen by the judges panel (the same group that chose the Top 20 at season’s start: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Tyce Diorio, and Lil C), her own favorite routine of Season 9, and a couple group numbers as well.
In fact, of the six judges favorites chosen, only Tiffany and fellow Top 4 finalist Chehon were featured. Chehon’s routine by Tyce Diorio, “The Suitcase,” was chosen by judge Mary as her favorite. Tiffany’s routine was a contemporary piece, one choreographed by Sonya Tayeh.
She and her fellow finalists all danced five routines last week during the performance finale, ostensibly to win votes to become the first ever duo of winners of the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer.” They also performed a short solo number as well.
The first group number was a first ever collaborative piece between choreographers Sonya Tayeh and Christopher Scott. It was a mesmerizing contemporary piece that featured the entire Top 20 dancers from Season 9.
Christopher Scott also choreographed an original animation routine in which he participated alongside Top 4 finalist Cyrus and all-stars tWitch and Comfort. Set around a card game, it was a work that showed amazing control, the dancers moving in bursts and stops that looked every bit like a stop-action movie sequence.
At one point in the show, after Cyrus had performed his favorite routine, which was the last routine of the season as well as the last dance performed on the performance show where he worked with tWitch in a fantastic animation routine, judge Nigel applauded Cyrus’ enthusiasm and his “brilliant” ability to work in dance areas he’d never experienced before. He also told Cyrus that he got bombarded on Twitter after telling Cyrus he wouldn’t vote for him last week, something many believed was not the right thing to do, even though Nigel couched his words in an apology.
But when all was said and done, Tiffany stood beside Eliana Girard for the results to see who America had chosen for the “Favorite Female Dancer.” The winner was…
Ballet dancer Eliana Girard.
Then it was the guys’ turn. Chehon stood beside Cyrus. Chehon kept looking down, dreading what he thought was sure to happen given the thunderous audience responses to Cyrus’ routines when he took the stage. Cyrus looked as if he was about to burst into tears, barely able to control his emotions.
The host Cat Deeley announced the winner…
Ballet dancer Chehon…
The shock on Chehon’s face as he looked up was honesty exemplified. He immediately turned to his left and hugged Cyrus, an animator from Atlanta with no formal training whatsoever who had made it to the finale of “So You Think You Can Dance.”
So did America get the champions right? Should Eliana and Chehon have won? They were almost certainly the most well-rounded and best-trained of all the dancers in the Season 9 competition. But were they really America’s favorites? Or is America in for another voting scandal conspiracy theory inspired by Nigel’s performance show apology to Cyrus?
Regardless, there is something more important to consider. Will there be a Season 10 of “So You Think You Can Dance?” As yet, Fox Television has not announced whether the show will return for another season.
