Are your costumes ready? How about your sweet tooth? There’s no way around the candy, but it’s one night out of the year. Besides, you can feel like good parents again by sneaking in a chemistry lesson this Halloween. Chemistry you ask? Absolutely. This project is ooey-gooey, but you don’t have to fend off the kids from eating it. This one doesn’t taste as good as their trick-or-treat loot, but it’s just as fun. Ready to make your own slime? Let’s get started.
What you need:
1 cup water
1-2 cups corn starch
Green food color or finger paint
Spatula or whisk
In a large bowl, pour 1 cup water. Slowly add corn starch 1/2 cup at a time, stirring constantly. Ask the kids to observe what happens to the mixture as you keep adding the starch. Let them touch the mixture and ask questions. Have them compare it to other things familiar to them that have the same texture.
Drop color in. Stir with spatula or whisk. Once thoroughly mixed, move mixture into a pot. The next step is for grown-ups, but kids can observe at a safe distance. Heat mixture over low to medium heat, stirring constantly, until slime turns sticky and elastic (about 3-5 minutes.) Let cool and move into a bowl. Let the kids manipulate the slime and ask them how heat changed it further. Float small objects on it to show them how the surface can hold it up. Store in an air-tight container.
On Halloween night, move slime into a bowl. Float novelty Halloween toys like plastic eyeballs and plastic body parts available at the craft or party store. Surround with pumpkins and all things Halloweeney for a great table centerpiece.
