The main weather story surrounds the probability for showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon followed by the arrival of a powerhouse cold front, and an extended period of unseasonably cool weather through at least the middle of next week.
After a rare late season day of warm weather where high temperatures topped out in the upper 70s and lower 80s including an 81 degree high at Gary, the Chicago land area will have one more day of unseasonably warm weather before the bottom falls out. Clouds will be on the increase Thursday morning but strong southwesterly winds will help to boost temperatures into the mid 70s. This will come before a powerful cold front associated with a strong upper level trough sweeps through the area Thursday afternoon/evening. Ahead of the cold front will be showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could be on the strong side with isolated damaging wind and hail. It will be a change in two months Thursday afternoon to Thursday night. The passage of the cold front will send temperatures on a downward spiral going from September-like to November-like in a matter of hours.
Friday will be noticeably cooler when heading out to work or school. High temperatures then will not make it out of the 50s and in a few locations the 40s. A blocking pattern will keep this cool air mass locked in place over the area through the weekend into next week with highs in the 40s and/or 50s.
