Philippians 3:13-14 (NET) states,
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single- minded. Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
We need to set our goals; we need to strive for what is ahead; we need to move on from what is now behind us; this is one of the keys to excellence.
There are certain steps one takes when setting a goal. The first should always be to put your faith in God. Matthew 17:20 (NET) states;
“He told them, “It was because of your little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; nothing will be impossible for you.””
Pray on your goals. Tell Christ what you are trying to achieve, because with Him all things are possible. The next step is to focus on the task at hand; identify what you are trying to achieve. Once you have that goal in sight, with no distractions, you will achieve the goal. All you need to do is filter everything to that one solid goal; all other goals will go along with it via the same steps. Third, come up with a plan of attack. You have Christ in mind; you have identified the goal; now how are you going to achieve the goal? Fourth, execute your plan of attack. Do not second guess yourself. Go with your plan of attack and you will be successful. Finally, give all the glory to God. Whether you achieve your goal, or need to try again; give praise to God and give Him all the glory.
There are strategies that you can take in order to stay on course and achieve your goal. Step two is where you see these strategies when you are focusing on the task at hand. You need to eliminate distractions. By focusing on that one goal, you will see that other goals are achieved along the way. It is similar to climbing a ladder; each step helps you towards the goal. Even the half way point of the ladder is a goal. That gets achieved when you focus on the top of the ladder. Also, just like climbing a ladder, you must remain focused. If you move to the left or the right, you fall. So go in steps. Come up with a strategy towards each “mini goal” with the focus being on the ultimate goal. Another way of looking at it is by raising a building. You need a strong foundation to begin with. Each level is an achieved goal. Remember, that strong foundation is Christ.
After you have achieved your goals, evaluate what you did to get to where you are. Did you keep Christ in mind with each step? Did each step lead to the “top of the ladder”? Were “mini-goals” achieved? Did you stay focused on the “ultimate goal”? Did you achieve what you set out to do?
With goal setting, you either reach your goal or you try again. You do not fail when you have Christ. You try again, stay focused, have your strong foundation in Christ Jesus, and you will see results. You will reach the “top of the ladder.”
