This is how organized religions get a bad rap: Tom Cruise suggests that it’s not him, but his religion, Scientology, that is to blame for two divorces, separation from his daughter and sorrowful upheaval in his love life.
That’s like saying that it’s gravity’s fault that the cup broke after I dropped it on the floor!
Don’t blame religion; blame the religious. Better still, forget blame.
Perhaps Tom should read this article in MindBodyGreen on avoiding the blame-game, or, blame-itis, as it’s termed.
In it, the author, Tonya Sheridan, writes:
“At this time in history, our world needs more people who have the courage to stop blaming and start leaping.”
We’ve been told for eons and we still argue: “As a man thinketh, so is he.”
This sort of casual relationship with the divine doesn’t swell with dignity or respect; sounds like a fair weather devotee; Scientology may not even miss him.
The only pesky culprit in this drama or any drama is that insidious gremlin: free will. The choices we make are the lives we lead.
Stars don’t have scripts to their personal lives and are stuck with the same free will factor as the rest of us mere mortals.
Frankly, I’m a bit disappointed in the famous Cancerian Scientologist; I would have thought his religion would have made him a better man!
Growing up with both Tom and Scientology has allowed me some up close and personal encounters with both over the years.
Okay, so, not so much with Tom; although, when my now 13-year old daughter was about two, Tom Cruise was in an award show of some kind on TV, along with lots of other ‘beautiful people;’ she was quite enamored with him when he was speaking; she would stop what was going on in her toddler world and focus with considerable concentration on Tom (must be an astrological link – they both have Moon in Cancer!)
The most that Tom (7/3/62, Syracuse, NY, no time) and I actually share is horoscopic mutuality; having both been born within several years of one another, we both have the following same positions in our charts; in fact, both Uranus and Pluto are in our 6th houses:
- Uranus in Leo
- Neptune in Scorpio
- Pluto in Virgo
We belong to the same astrological generation so the issues we experience among our peers and within the culture of our times would be similar.
A little about Scientology
Scientology is strong in the consciousness-training department; beyond that, personally speaking, I like/love Jesus and those teachings, and Unity always provided both orientations.
Scientology, from Wikipedia:
Scientology is a body of beliefs and related practices created by L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986), starting in 1952, as a successor to his earlier self-help system, Dianetics.
Hubbard characterized Scientology as a religion, and in 1953 incorporated the Church of Scientology in Camden, New Jersey.
Scientology teaches that people are immortal beings who have forgotten their true nature. Its method of spiritual rehabilitation is a type of counseling known as auditing, in which practitioners aim to consciously re-experience painful or traumatic events in their past in order to free themselves of their limiting effects.
Old wisdom is still good wisdom
Regardless of whether it’s an ancient philosophy or new age spirituality, Cruise’s perspective just goes to show that Shakespeare was right:
“The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our stars, the fault lies within the man.”
From recent news:
“He hasn’t lost faith completely but he is blaming Scientology for what has happened.”
Along with A-list stars such as John Travolta and Kirstie Alley, Cruise is one the religion’s most high-profile ¬members. But he’s now trying to reduce his involvement with ¬publicising the beliefs.
The end of his second marriage to actress Nicole Kidman, 45, was also blamed on the religion.
The friend said: “He has lost Nicole and now his wife and daughter. He has always used the Scientology techniques but he has now realised they don’t work in marriage.”
Cruise’s close friendship with David Miscavige, the leader of the church, has also suffered.
The pal said: “Tom and David have been attached at the hip but this ¬relationship has deteriorated and that, along with the loss of Katie and Suri, is forcing him to question his role in the church.
The source said: “Tom is no longer volunteering to be the public poster boy for Scientology. You’ll see he is seriously calming that down, he will head up the annual fundraisers and awards show but that’s in-house.
“In the outside world, Tom will not be promoting the religion, he is distancing himself.
“Many believe he is pulling away because he thinks it was Scientology that split him and Katie up.” The break down of his friendship with Miscavige is just as crucial in his decision to distance himself from the church.
David, 52, has been involved in the religion since he was just 11 and was an assistant to its founder L. Ron Hubbard.
Until his split from Katie, Cruise was said to worship David “like a God” and their intense friendship has been blamed by some as the reason for TomKat’s marriage ending.
But today sources within Scientology said Tom hasn’t been seen at the services or Sunday brunch in months.
The source said he has told friends if he were no longer a Scientologist he and Katie could live happily ever after.
He is understood to be using “go-between’s” to tip her off that he is disillusioned with his faith.
The source said: “If Tom truly leaves, Katie would reconsider. She was in love with Tom, he was her childhood crush, it took a lot of strength to break free. But now she has peace of mind but no love.”
Is Tom the Prodigal Son and will Scientology welcome him back with open arms now? And, will Sagittarian, Katie?
