Plan B uber pro Ryan Sheckler won the Skate Streetstyle event at the 2012 Dew Tour City Championships in San Francisco, California. The event was held on October 21.2012 and had a few firsts. It was the debut of the Dew Tour’s new Skate Streetstyle event, the first win for Sheckler in a minute and the first time the Dew Tour has been in San Francisco.
It seems that lately Dew Tour has struggled to choose what street format they wanted to go with. Their first contest of this season Pantech Beach Championships held in Ocean City, Maryland didn’t even have a street contest. Rob Dyrdek’s Street League really changed the way people think about what a legit street oriented contest should feel like. Everyone from the X-Games to the Dew Tour seemed to take a step back and reevaluate their street formats.
Dew Tour’s Skate Streetstyle has done a great job of solidifying Dew Tour’s street style contests. Hopefully it was successful enough to warrant a Skate Streetstyle event at all the stops in their 2013 contest series.- Jason Chapman The National Skateboarding Examiner
Official Press Release:
RYAN SHECKLER WINS DEBUT SKATE STREETSTYLE AT DEW TOUR TOYOTA CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS
San Francisco, Calif. – Oct. 21, 2012 – Harrison Street was the center of attention today at the Dew Tour Toyota City Championships. The debut of the progressive Streetstyle disciplines shut down three city blocks, turning them into a skater and BMX rider’s dream downhill set-up of makeshift ramps and rails. Ryan Sheckler’s first run gave him the top score of the day, including a stylish backside lipslide down the rail and a frontside 360 indy up the step-up. However, spectators on the packed sidewalks were held in suspense as each skater closed in on his score. Milton Martinez wowed the crowd with his last run, pulling out a close second place score that threatened Sheckler’s standing in the final minutes. David Gravette rounded out the podium in third place.
“It was a really unique contest and I had a lot of fun,” said Sheckler. “I think everyone that skated in it had a blast. It’s completely new, it’s never been done before and I think it worked out great. I hope they do this event again. This is the only kind of contest I want to skate, it was so fun.”
The Dew Tour, in conjunction with the athletes and industry veterans, created the Streetstyle discipline as a way to recognize the thriving action sports community in San Francisco. The all-new event drives progression, while giving the athletes a never before seen platform to show off their creativity and style.
The Dew Tour partnered with San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department to host Community Day at Civic Center Plaza today. In addition to the Dew Tour Experience, events included a demo with the Mountain Dew Amateur Skate Team, FTC’s Open House local skate contest and Camp Woodward skate clinics. Dew Tour Community Day benefitted the youth programs of San Francisco while promoting an active, healthy lifestyle. Mongoose made a donation of donating BMX bikes, helmets and pads to the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department youth programs, while the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco accepted skateboard donations throughout the day.
The 2012 Dew Tour culminates in December at the iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge, Colorado.
