Rural living and a country setting are perfect for festivals and this past weekend September 28th-29th 2012; Fayetteville W.V’s Cantrell’s Ultimate Rafting www.ultimaterafting.com hosted Boatfest www.facebook.com/#!/BoatFestWV?fref=ts . A Gauley rafting season favorite complete with your favorite local and a few new to the venue bands, this little festival had it all. Outside of the welcome office were three tables full of goodies from The Great Googly Moogly www.facebook.com/#!/ggmwv?fref=ts There was a wide variety of items to buy from hammock chairs to parachute hammocks, carved/decorated wooden boxes, purses/bags, Aquaholic apparel, stickers, skulls, beautiful glass work and more. Food was served in the bar with a nice selection of bar food and for the guests rafting, and enjoying the festival, a full dinner was provided. Cantrell’s Ultimate rafting’s Boatfest shows country living and outdoor sports isn’t all West Virginia is about.
Friday night kicked off, Boatfest, on the outside stage with a drizzly start but as the moon began to shine through the fog and the sprinkles stopped a crowd was just arriving. The music moved inside to the bar where the dance floor was opened up and sound echoed beautifully outside to a large sitting area/campground. I caught the last two bands of the night after paying only $25 for two nights of camping and music complete with a huge and very clean shower-house. The, Boatmen, http://www.reverbnation.com/theboatmen# were playing to a full room with other musicians joining in, exciting the crowd and creating a playful mood. After the Boatmen lit up the room, Fletchers Grove, http://www.reverbnation.com/fletchersgrove an all talent band with a funky feel took the stage. You can’t help but feel like tripping acid and playing Nintendo or taking a long road trip out west when listen to this band. Their young guitarist is just incredible and with a great mix of drums and sound effects they are funk perfection. The night ended with a mix of musicians entertaining and showing off their incredible talent to a still packed bar.
Saturday night of the Boatfest started early with bands on the outside stage. The entire campground was full of song and as the sun went down the, Fabulous Brothers Steele, http://thefabulousbrotherssteele.bandcamp.com/ fired the crowd up and ended the day by inviting the crowd to the bar to greet the night. Motion Theatre, http://www.reverbnation.com/motiontheatre out of Beckley, W.V. was just beginning to play. These boys were truly off the hook good! Motion Theatre rocked the bar with raw lyrics, fantastic guitar/drums and absolutely beautiful vocals, these boys are signed talent all the way! The music didn’t stop there, after Motion Theatre rocked the house the Poor Taters http://www.reverbnation.com/poortaters kept the crowd dancing with more people piling in to check out all Boatfest had to offer.
The, Floorboards, http://www.reverbnation.com/floorboards out of Roanoke, V.A. were next to take the stage with their southern rock sound. The Floorboards are a real treat to the ears and worth the trip to VA to watch them play. They sang a song about the tobacco fields of Virginia and living where it grows. This is a song that will make you throw up a fist and say “F*#@ YEA!” It was full of energy and gritty lyrics; the fiddle playing was nothing short of amazing. A hard act to follow up, The Greens, http://www.reverbnation.com/thegreens were next with their frenzy inducing sound. These guys are a state favorite and it was easy to see why. The Greens are pure talent and will make rough love to your ears! The Boatfest continued and remained packed well into the AM hours. The Boatfest at Cantrell’s Ultimate Rafting is sure to be an even bigger hit next year. Just because it’s fall and getting colder doesn’t mean country living requires slowing down. Get up and dance with the harvest moon and breathe in the crisp night air.
