Episode 2 of season 5 of Castle, “Cloudy With a Chance of Murder,” aired October1, 2012.
In week one of ABC’s “Castle,” fans learned that the romance is finally on between crime-fighter Kate Beckett and crime writer Rick Castle. After four seasons, the pairing couldn’t come at a better time. This week’s episode, “Cloudy With a Chance of Murder” took the romance to a fun place as the lovers tried to figure out how to be a couple and still keep things a secret.
There is a strict “no fraternization” policy at the police station and Beckett and Castle must keep their relationship under wraps. Beckett is concerned that working in a room full of detectives, they won’t be able to pull it off. The pair agrees that while they are in public, they will behave as if they are single. You know this is going to lead to trouble.
The plot line for this episode of “Castle” involves a murdered weather girl. While at the coroner’s office, Dr. Lanie Parish notices something looks different about Beckett and surmises she’s been having sex. She knows because she says Beckett is “glowing.” Castle is tickled with the assessment and struggles to hide his pride. Lanie asks Beckett, “So, who’s the guy?” Furtive glances are exchanged and Castles chimes in, “Yeah, who’s the guy?” Beckett brushes the whole thing off.
The case has the detectives and Castel spending a lot of time at the TV station. They learn that one of the newscaster’s was having a secret affair with the victim but they had kept their relationship under wraps too because of a station policy against work relationships. The newscaster, Miles, explains their relationship was great at first, hot, sexy, secretive but then went sour because of all the lies they had to tell to keep the secret. This really gets Beckett’s head spinning.
While at the station, Beckett runs into another reporter he knows, Christina, a beautiful woman with a reputation for being sexually aggressive, who invites him to do an interview on her show that evening. Stammering for a reason not, he agrees. While on air, Christina corners him with “No one special in your life?” Beckett is watching the interview and her ears perk up at this question. “No, no one special,” Castle replies, keeping to their pact to appear single while in public. The reporter then asks, “Will you have dinner with me?” A brief pause, during which Beckett is willing him to say no, followed by Castle’s reply, “Love to.” Castle has some explaining to do.
He pleads his case with Beckett saying it will keep people from suspecting anything between the two of them if he goes out with this woman. He will simply take her to a lavish, romantic dinner in a public place and that will be the end of it.
Instead of meeting at the restaurant as they had planned, Christina shows up early at Castle’s apartment bearing oysters and chocolate covered strawberries. At the same time, Detectives Esposito and Ryan are discussing Castle’s good fortune to be dating Christina who has a reputation for seducing famous men with her exotic bikini collection. Beckett’s worried. Just then she gets a call from Castle who unknowingly pocket-dialed her while trying to fend off Christina’s advances. What becket hears is Castle shouting for someone to get back followed by the sound of breaking lass. She runs out of the station to save her man.
Meanwhile Castle is back stepping around his apartment trying to avoid the woman who has now shed her clothing to reveal an attractive bathing suit. He knocks a glass fruit bowl off the counter. When Beckett arrives, she hears muffled sounds of a struggle coming from Castle’s apartment and lets herself in only to discover castle pinned on the sofa, his face smeared with lipstick and Christina straddling him.
Cut to the TV station where Castle is trying desperately to dig his way out of this mess. He asks Beckett what she wants and she replies, “What I want is not to have the image of a bikini-clad woman stuffing her boobs in your face stuck in my brain. So, good luck with that.”
Back at the police station, she leaves to go home, refusing his offer to walk her out. He waits a few moments, and then goes to her apartment. He apologizes for agreeing to the date in the first place. She doesn’t want to worry about him with other women. He assures her she doesn’t have to. For now, they will have to live with the questions until they can work it out and that may mean at some point they can no longer work together. They agree that their “being single” act will be limited to talking about dating others but not actually doing it. He leans in to kiss her and she pulls back, saying still can’t because all she can see is boobs in his face. Cue the trademark Castle puzzled look.
No doubt the romance between these two will continue to heat up for some time. We will have a little fun watching them try to keep it a secret and learn to become a couple together. This Examiner is looking forward to very cozy season.
