It isn’t often in his interviews that Paul McCartney doesn’t spin many of the same Beatles stories over and over. But in “Paul Talks,” a great spoken word CD available through her website, Julia Baird, John Lennon’s half-sister, actually gets Paul to look deep into his history and go into some rarely revealed memories.
In “Paul Talks,” taped in 1987 at the offices of his MPL Communications in London, Paul talks warmly about a variety of subjects that include meeting John Lennon at the Woolton Fete, playing with the Quarrymen, rehearsing in the bathroom, composing his first song with Lennon, meeting George Harrison, memories of John’s childhood home Mendips, his brother Michael and whether he collects Beatles memorabilia.
Some of the talk is about McCartney’s memories of John’s mother and being at Mendips.
There are also some interesting surprises. He recalls the first song he wrote was titled “Just Fun,” and sings some of the lyrics. He says that George Harrison was brought into the group because he could play “Raunchy” and recalls the scene when he was auditioning with the song while on the top of a bus. He also gives some personal reflections, such as his conflicts with Stu Sutcliffe as a musician.
It goes beyond the usual territory of his interviews and it’s quite a revealing discussion. The CD is available directly from Julia though her website.
