In episode 5, “Forgiveness” of “Revenge,” the tone was all about repenting as apologies were coming fast and furious. The episode aired on Sunday October 28 at7:00 p.m. and saw unexpected apologies from both Emily and her mother but not to each other – sort of.
As Emily (Emily VanCamp) wakes, she is in the midst of a dream about her father reviving her after her mother drowned her when she was a child. Aidan (Barry Sloane) is in bed beside her. He wakes and tells Emily that her mom not only knew Gordon Murphy but was married to him.
That same morning, Kara Clarke (Jennifer Jason-Leigh) goes to see Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) acting like they were best buddies. Kara asks about the kidnapper because she is looking for information about her husband but no one knows he’s dead except Emily and Aidan. Victoria offers to let Kara stay with her while she is in town to help keep her safe. Face to face, you would think the two of them were BFFs.
Nolan visits Amanda at the hospital and through Jack who has been there throughout the night, learns that Amanda’s mom came to see her. He naturally dashes off to tell Emily and mentions she has let him down as he needed her when he learned his own father died. They turn on the computer and watch the action over at the Graysons’ place. Jack calls Emily to tell her Amanda is awake. Emily leaves to go see Amanda. Charlotte waltzes into the room and tells her mom, in from of Kara that Amanda is awake and doing well. Kara makes her excuses and heads for the hospital.
Before entering Amanda’s room, Emily remembers her father telling her that her mother died. Once in the room, she offers to let Amanda and the baby stay with her. She sends Jack home to get some rest and then tells Amanda about her mom being back but can’t warn her of the possible danger as they get interrupted.
Kara shows up at the hospital, sees Emily holding Carl and asks to hold him. Emily asks what Amanda was lke as a child and Kara says gentle. In return, Kara asks if Amanda ever talks about her to which Em replies, no. Next Em asks how old was Amanda when you two were separated? They are interrupted too.
The next day, Jack brings Amanda and the baby to Emily’s and leaves. Amanda mentions she is thinking of telling Jack that the baby isn’t his. Emily changes the subject and tells her about her mother trying to drown her and that she might be at risk. She tells her when Kara shows up to tell her to just go away.
Cara shows up to see Amanda and launches into her apology. She is amazed at how strong Amanda is. She’s a survivor. Through choked back tears, she explains that she was sick for a very long time and not in control of her actions. She says she and her dad made a choice, one she’s had to live with. Somehow Amanda’s dad forgave Kara. Amanda looks at her and says I forgive you, too. Outside the room, Emily listens and silently weeps.
After Kara leaves, Emily tells Amanda the baby really is Jack’s. She just wanted to keep Amanda on her side. Amanda accepts this almost in stride and says she still wants to tell Jack the truth about who she is but Emily talks her out it saying Jack will be heartbroken and it’s not fair to do that to him.
Will all this forgiveness lead to peacemaking? It’s not likely. The need for “Revenge” runs too deep. And while Kara didn’t exactly apologize to her daughter, she thought she was. Tune in next week to learn more.
