I tried my hardest to look at this film from every angle and appreciate it. The hardest part for me is that being such a fan of the first I knew with the extended time between the two they couldn’t mess this up. Well I was truly wrong. Silent Hill Revelations did something that many movies do when they failed to execute the plot. They don’t even live up to the name on the marquee.
Directed by Michael J. Bassett and starring Sean Bean, Adelaide Clemens, and Kit Harington Silent Hill takes us back to the ash filled town to settle some unfinished business. In the sequel Heather/ Alessa is having nightmares that she is experiencing while awake or sleep about images from her past. What she doesn’t know is these images are of Silent Hill and they are trying to get her to return to rid the town forever of the darkness. Heather’s father Harry has been trying to protect her since she returned but why all of a sudden they want her back now I have no idea. Also this girl is almost ready for college yet the visions are just now appearing too? Seems like they should have been more solid with the story and showed what has happened since the first instead of throwing you in the fire. Rare these days to find a sequel that you truly need to watch the first to understand but this is not the case. If you have never seen the first Silent Hill or played the game you will have no clue what is going on and they don’t do a great job of explaining.
There is a return of Radha Mitchell the mother briefly as she is still somehow stuck in Silent Hill. The sad part is she was only in the film for five minutes because her lack of presence was for sure felt by this fan of her performance in the first movie. The acting by Bean, and Clemens is terrible and the only ray of light is the performance of Harington as Vincent. All the usual suspects are in the sequel the blind nurses, the wobbling torsos and of course Red Pyramid who is a “hero” in this film? Those expecting to see something new and unique with these characters will be disappointed and won’t enjoy seeing the very badly done mannequin spider as well. The setting was improved as the times have changed from the previous Silent Hill but there was so much thrown together you couldn’t appreciate it. It has taken me awhile to figure out what I liked in the film which is why it has taken me so long to write the review and sadly I still can’t find anything.
There is looks of a another film with a prison transport heading into the town that burns forever so maybe there will be a gore fest high body count straight to DVD third film. I’m sure that will be the case since there was not a great total coming from the box office. If you are curious to see this film the 2-D option is fine and will save you some money. I would say wait for it at the rental box but I won’t even go there. Overall i’m truly displeased with this sequel and I don’t know if it’s because I liked the first so much or because it was just that bad. I tend to lean towards the latter. Silent Hill Revelations in theaters now.
