After a breakout debut with last year’s Blood Red Road (a book I called even better than The Hunger Games), author Moira Young continues to raise the bar with her stunning sequel, Rebel Heart, in stores today.
Picking up where the first book left off, Rebel Heart finds leading lady Saba facing the fallout of her actions in Blood Red Road. She’s fighting to be reunited with her love, Jack, while facing down the possibility that he may have committed the ultimate betrayal, and struggling to find a new rapport with her twin brother Lugh, now that the dynamics of their relationship have so drastically changed. She’s also facing down her own inner demons — and it’s not clear whether she’ll survive the struggle.
Not all Hunger Games fans will agree that Young’s series is better — but the appeal of Blood Red Road and Rebel Heart is obvious. A strong, female heroine, a disturbing dystopian setting, and plenty of action driven by an over-arcing sense of love and devotion to family and friends. Rebel Heart is the perfect antidote to readers suffering from The Hunger Games withdrawal. And since The Hunger Games: Catching Fire won’t hit theaters until next year, I can think of no better way to pass the time than by immersing yourself in the world of Blood Red Road and Rebel Heart.
As the second book in a planned trilogy, Rebel Heart deftly avoids the dreaded “middle book syndrome.” Instead, Young brilliantly tackles intense, difficult, and often mature subject matter — without skirting around the issue. Throughout Rebel Heart, each obstacle is faced head-on, even as the characters falter and make mistakes — some quite significant. And just when you think the book has taken you beyond all reason, Young tosses in another punch-to-the-gut twist. The ending will leave readers crying out for more and anxiously awaiting the final book.
Young also continues the elegantly stark writing style established in Blood Red Road — although she treats readers to an alternate POV for the first 29 pages (Jack!).
Fast-paced, action-packed, filled with danger and romance alike, it will be difficult to put this book down — even after finishing the very last page. Rebel Heart is an emotional whirlwind worth every second of agony.
Rebel Heart is in stores now. Here is the official synopsis:
It seemed so simple: Defeat the Tonton, rescue her kidnapped brother, Lugh, and then order would be restored to Saba’s world. Simplicity, however, has proved to be elusive. Now, Saba and her family travel west, headed for a better life and a longed-for reunion with Jack. But the fight for Lugh’s freedom has unleashed a new power in the dust lands, and a formidable new enemy is on the rise.
What is the truth about Jack? And how far will Saba go to get what she wants? In this much-anticipated follow-up to the riveting Blood Red Road, a fierce heroine finds herself at the crossroads ofdanger and destiny, betrayal and passion
