Hurricane Sandy will approach the New Jersey coast today, while becoming a powerful coastal nor’easter hybrid storm. Rain will gradually move into the region this afternoon from southeast to northwest, with winds gradually increasing and becoming strong to damaging at times later this evening into the overnight. Some showers and breezy conditions may impact the region into mid-week as the remnants of Sandy linger over the northeast.
- A High Wind Warning is in effect for the potential of strong and damaging winds from 9 a.m. Monday through 11 a.m. Tuesday. Wind speeds will strengthen rapidly into the afternoon and will last through much of the night and into early Tuesday. Winds are expected to be sustained from the northeast at 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph in the valleys and 75 mph across the higher terrain. Strong winds will likely bring down trees and power lines with widespread power outages possible, but not all areas will lose power. Any loose objects will also be easily propelled into the air becoming dangerous flying projectiles.
- A Flood Watch is also in effect from Monday afternoon through late Tuesday night. Very heavy rainfall from Hurricane Sandy will lead to rainfall amounts of 1/2 to 2 inches in valley locations and 2 to 4 inches across the higher terrain and remainder of the region, except in the Catskills where up to 6 inches may fall.
