Dexter, ME– Some soccer teams do not have eight different players score goals throughout a season.
The Foxcroft Ponies boys team had eight that scored goals in a 8-0 victory over the Dexter Tigers on Friday afternoon.
“It was great to see a lot of different people score. I think we scored eight goals and had eight different people scoring,” Ponies coach Luis Ayala said. “Once it was 4-0 at halftime we started working on different things.”
Sophomore Alex Barcelo got the scoring started just 5:20 into the game. Barcelo took a pass from Sam Keane and fired the ball into the net.
Julian Zepeda, Antonio Ayala and Ethan Kelly also scored first half goals. The goal by Kelly came with 8:08 remaining in the first half. It gave the Ponies a 4-0 advantage heading into the half.
“I got a clear shot and I took it,” Kelly said.
Dexter coach Peter Murray lost a large group of seniors. This year the Tigers have nine freshmen and seven sophomores on the roster. Tyler Salsbury is the only senior. Dexter has a total of 17 players on their varsity roster. They do not have a junior varsity team.
“We have such a small number of kids, fatigue is a factor. We are asking five or six kids in the middle of the field to do everything for us. It is hard to sustain for 80 minutes,”Dexter coach Peter Murray said. “It is like asking a 103 pound wrestler to wrestle in the heavyweight division. It is nobody’s fault. It is not because they are not trying hard. It is a perfect storm of events that happened for us where we graduated a lot of kids and we had some we expected back that didn’t come back.”
Ayala added, “I knew they were not strong this year. Dexter for years has been a strong, powerful team. Numbers are down.”
Keane, Nick Boyd, Josh Bombero and Evan Hong recorded second half goals for Foxcroft. Antonio Ayala and Boyd each had one assist.
The schedule will get very difficult for the Ponies. They will get into the thick of their class B schedule.
“After this we have a tough class B schedule. Old Town, Presque Isle, Hermon,” Ayala said. “It is a whole different level. Teams are quicker and more physical. They are tough teams. It is not going to be the same in the next couple of games.”
Michael Lopez and Tanner Strout combined for two saves on four shots for the Ponies. Foxcroft (1-0) will next play on Friday, September 7th. They will take on Old Town in their home opener. Click here for the fall schedules for the Ponies.
Jared Grinnell and Chris Rice combined for five saves on 18 shots for the Tigers. Dexter (0-1) will next play on September 5th when they travel to Orono.
