The Promises Foundation announced Friday that they will host the 7th Annual Polo in the Palisades fundraiser, at Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades, California. The event benefiting Miriam’s House, a 15 bedroom transitional living home for low-income women and their children will be held on September 23 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Master of Ceremonies Paul Hughes will compere the festivities which will feature a special luncheon, three polo matches and a live auction overseen by KTLA’s Wendy Burch (pictured on left).
The Promises Foundation will honor a number of Los Angeles-based individuals at the event including Dave Barge (CEO of the South Bay Roundup convention for Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon), Kurt Garbe (a marriage, family and child counselor), and Elise Buik (chief executive officer of United Way of Greater Los Angeles). Individual tickets to “Polo in the Palisades” cost $250.00 per person and are available via www.promisesfoundation.org.
The pretty 186-acre state historic park – which was left to the State of California by Will Rogers’ widow, Betty Blake – encompasses the vaudeville actor’s 31-room western ranch house (now a museum), a stable, corrals, riding ring, roping arena, a 300 by 160-yard-long polo field and a 2-hole golf course. In 1971, the Will Rogers Western Ranch House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The park is the spiritual home to the Will Rogers Polo Club which hosts a number of annual polo matches – including the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic – at LA’s last remaining polo field. These events are not only immensely popular with equestrians but are often graced by the presence of many Hollywood celebrities, so don’t be surprised if you bump into a few A-listers if you’re visiting the park on a weekend.
Although there is no tent or RV camping within the park it’s still a great destination for those RVers who would like to tour the wonderful ranch house, take a riding lesson, trail ride, hike the trail to Inspiration Point or simply enjoy a picnic with friends and family whilst watching a couple of chukkers. Park staff and docents offer tours of the Ranch House Thursdays and Fridays, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
RV camping is available at Dockweiler Beach State Park (19 miles from Will Rogers SHP) in El Segundo or RV/tent camping at Malibu Beach RV Park (16 miles from Will Rogers SHP) in Malibu.
