Supporters of Planned Parenthood scream that they are not an abortion clinic. The organization claims that it provides many needed health screenings, including mammograms, for women. In reality, I have yet to find a Planned Parenthood center that offers mammography. A search of the two facilities in Arkansas reveals a glaring truth — Planned Parenthood is all about birth control, abortion and alternative lifestyles. It is not about getting women low-cost or free access to screening services like mammography.
Cut funding — women die from breast cancer
We hear this from many celebrities, like Scarlett Johansson and Eva Longoria, who champion Planned Parenthood and the organization’s agenda. I too, bought into this lie until I did some research. Arkansas is not an abortion friendly state. There are only two Planned Parenthood facilities. One is in Little Rock and the other is in Fayetteville. So I wanted to see what types of services I could get at one of the two centers.
Neither Planned Parenthood facility offers mammography. They say that they will refer patients out for mammography screening. That said, Little Rock has many places for low-cost or free mammograms. None of the Little Rock facilities listed is associated with Planned Parenthood and all of the facilities offer better services for women’s health than Planned Parenthood.
How much does it cost to give a written referral for a mammogram? Next to nothing. Actually, here in Northwest Arkansas, near Fayetteville, Mercy Women’s Health Center does not require a physicians referral for a screening mammogram. You just have to make an appointment.
What about the general health services? Planned Parenthood offers the same exact health screening you can get at a local Walgreens, including flu shots.
So what about women dying from breast cancer if funding is cut? That is a lie. Planned Parenthood does nothing to help prevent women from getting breast cancer, they do not perform breast cancer screenings, nor do they have any services specifically for women with breast cancer. If funding is cut, what does the community lose — nothing. Every single service provided by Planned Parenthood is already available to low and moderate income women elsewhere. Check it out for yourself — search for the Planned Parenthood facilities in your area and ask them if they perform mammography, breast ultrasound, or breast MRIs. You will be surprised at what they tell you.
