On Saturday October 27, 2012 Leon Russell played the South Shore Room at Harrah’s Tahoe.
Attendance for this show was pretty good. Over 500 fans showed up to hear Leon’s biggest hits and they were not disappointed. The venue holds about 700 (seating).
Leon Russell is an American musician and songwriter, who has recorded as a session musician, sideman, and maintained a solo career in music.
Born in Lawton, Oklahoma, he began playing piano at the age of four. Russell attended Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At this time he was already performing at Tulsa nightclubs. After moving to Los Angeles, he became a session musician, working as a pianist on the recordings of many notable musical artists since the 1960’s. By the late 1960’s, Russell diversified, becoming successful as an arranger and wrote and co-wrote songs. As a musician, he worked his way from gigs as a sideman to well known performers. By 1970 he had graduated to solo recording artist, although he never ended all his previous roles within the music industry.
Russell was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, March 14, 2011, at a black-tie dinner at The Waldorf-Astoria hotel in Manhattan.
Current band members include, Leon Russell – (vocals, piano), Jackie Wessel – (bass, backing vocals), Chris Simmons – (lead guitar, backing vocals), Beau Charron – (guitar, slide guitar, about everything else, backing vocals) and Brandon Holder – (drums, backing vocals).
The set lasted around 90 minutes and went something like this,
“Prince Of Peace”, “Rollin’ In My Sweet Baby’s Arms”, “Stranger In A Strange Land”, “Let The Good Times Roll”, “Dixie Lullaby”, “Back To The Island”, “Wild Horses”, “Georgia On My Mind”, “I’ve Just Seen A Face”, “Humming Bird”, “Magic Mirror”, “Tight Rope”, “Delta Lady”, “Walking Blues”, “A Song For You”, “Jumping Jack Flash”/”Poppa Was A Rolling Stone”/”Paint It Black”/”Kansas City” and two encore songs, “Great Balls Of Fire’ and “Roll Over Beethoven”.
This examiner usually covers a little harder form of rock & roll, but I must say I was very impressed. The crowd seemed to know every word to every song, even the covers.
A great time was had by all.
