Filipino-American lightweight MMA fighter Phillipe “Super” Nover (7-4-1), once dubbed by Dana White as “the next GSP” during his stint at the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter show, submitted Derrick Kenningham (7-4-0) via rear naked choke on Bellator 74 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The Brooklyn-based fighter, who is also a registered nurse, was impressive in his return fight after being away from the cage for almost a year. “Thanks man. It was a tough one,” Nover tweeted me when I congratulated him after the fight. And indeed it was, as Nover had to earn his victory over the scrappy Kennington, who trains out of Pellegrino MMA in Jersey.
In the first round, both men traded some nice shots on their feet, with nobody gaining a clear advantage in positioning. Nover was almost submitted a couple of times with an armbar and a triangle, but able managed to scramble and escape and land a few ground and pound shot of his own.
In the second round however, Nover pounded out Kennington with his elbows after being able to take him down and get his opponent on the guard position. Nover teed off on Kennington, who was leaking blood from his mouth and barely holding on. Recognizing his weakened opponent with a little under a minute left in the round, Nover took Kennington’s back and slipped in a rear naked choke. Kennington barely managed to tap and laid momentarily unconscious, while Nover chalked up a tough win in his comeback bid.
Nover, who switched his nickname from “The Filipino Assassin” to “Super”, is motivated and training hard to get back to the UFC.
“You rocket to the top and then it’s a slippery slope going down,” Nover, 28, said. “But that’s the MMA game. Sometimes you have to ride the wave and hope the best. I’ve definitely have had the worst of luck in my last few years of fighting. I really haven’t been able to show my true performance out there. I’m so glad my body is feeling good now and my mind is feeling great. I’m so excited to continue fighting.” — Nover on his career as posted on New York SB Nation
