Barely in their teens, The Peterson Brothers have already opened for such renowned musicians as Los Lonely Boys at Gruene Hall, B.B. King, and Pinetop Perkins. Voted one of the top 10 bands in the Blues, Soul, and Funk category at the Austin Music Awards last year, Glenn Jr., 16, and Alex, 13, have solidified their place on the Austin music scene as true prodigies with a deep blues sensibility that belies their years. Their musical skill and maturity have landed them a slot with The Stapletones at ACL Fest on October 12th of this year and with their growing audience, it seems there is no stopping the brothers.
In August, The Peterson Brothers began a regular residency at Austin’s famed Continental Club. Raised in Bastrop County on a diet of blues and old school funk, their motto “Keeping the Blues Alive, Texas Style” couldn’t be more fitting. Drawing on such influences as Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Robert Cray, Glenn displays the stage presence of a performer twice his age. His skilled guitar licks and deep, bluesy voice are a revelation to R & B lovers, and his younger brother Alex is no less impressive on bass guitar and violin. Their live performance includes inspired covers of classic songs from such musicians as Santana and Jimi Hendrix, and it is clear from their version of these songs that they are not just playing them, but reinterpreting them to make them uniquely their own. During their 90 minute sets, the brothers have treated the audience to such songs as Chuck Berry’s “Don’t You Lie to Me,” Howlin’ Wolf’s “Sitting on Top of the World, “ and Muddy Waters’ “Got My Mojo Working.” In an age of pre-packaged, over-produced teen pop, The Peterson Brothers are a breath of fresh air—real, gifted musicians who are constantly honing and perfecting their craft.
With local buzz already growing around these incredibly talented teens, Alex and Glenn show no signs of slowing down. They are already working on their debut CD, which will be produced by Michael Freeman, the producer of Pinetop Perkins’ Grammy Award winning Joined at the Hip (Pinetop Perkins and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith). They are now playing every Monday night at The Continental Club, and are scheduled to appear at the 2013 T-Bone Walker Blues Fest in Linden, Texas on June 21st and 22nd of 2013 (http://www.tbonewalkerfest.com/flashintro/). With dates being added constantly for the brothers and growing appreciation for their music, The Peterson Brothers are new rising stars on the Austin music scene. Make sure to catch them while you still can. They have just been selected in the first round of bands to play SXSW 2013.
