If there is one thing kids seem to like about school, aside from recess, it’s the rare occasion that visitors stop by the classroom. When those visitors happen to come bearing gifts, it’s sure to be a memorable affair. For one local elementary school in the Palm Springs Unified School District, three hundred and forty of their students were in for a special treat this week. Cahuilla Elementary (833 Mesquite Avenue) students in grades 3-5 were gifted with dictionaries thanks to our local Palm Springs Rotary Club.
In honor of Dictionary Distribution Day, the rotary club and the PSUSD have partnered to make this an annual event. Having placed books in the hands of over 2,300 students in the district so far, and costing an estimated $7,100, or roughly $800 annually – it has been funded entirely by the rotary club.
“Members of our club volunteer at this school on a regular basis,” said Milt Levinson, “but this event is special because we know that for some kids this may be the only book that belongs to them. Our club and Rotary International strongly believe that literacy is so very important in the development of children.”
History of the Palm Springs Rotary Club
Founded in 1941, the rotary club has helped over 50 local charities and accumulated over $1 million dollars in donations from members to date. If that isn’t impressive enough, the local rotary club has raised more than $55,000 specifically to assist Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate Polio globally.
Members of the Palm Springs Rotary Club are leaders in the community and their chosen professions such as education, tourism/hospitality, medicine, real estate and business.
