Two of the Central Lakes Conference’s top teams went head to head at Sartell High School’s football field tonight. Fergus Falls came into the game with a 3-0 conference record and 3-1 overall after a loss to Moorhead last week. Sartell was 2-0 in the conference with a 4-0 record for the season.
Fergus Falls took the opening kickoff and marched down field 68 yards in eight plays capped by a 21 yard pass from senior quarterback Brady Hansen to fellow senior Reece Johnson to start the scoring.
The Sabres returned the kickoff to their own 28 yard line and then engineered their own eight play drive with senior wide receiver Pat Fischer scoring on a 25 yard pass from senior quarterback Parker Hagen.
Fergus Falls opened the second quarter scoring on a six yard run by workhorse senior Walker Heinen. Both teams then lit the grass on fire, scoring four more touchdowns in the quarter.
Sartell answered on their next possession when sophomore tailback Darek Stachowski broke free for a 62 yard scoring run. Stachowski was in for senior Eric McAfee who Sartell coach Scott Hentges said was out with a hip pointer.
The Sabres then made a defensive stop of the Otters and turn out another 80 yard drive finished with a 35 yard pass from Hagen to senior Matt Worzala to give Sartell its first lead at 21-14.
Fergus Falls came right back scoring again on a 32 yard pass play from Hansen to Johnson for Johnson’s second touchdown of the game. The Otters then got the ball back on a Sartell fumble and Hansen hit senior Drew Reinertson with an eight yard pass with 10 seconds left in the half to take the lead at 28-21.
Everyone took a deep breath in the third quarter and there was no scoring. The Sabres tied the game when Hagen and Fischer hooked up again on a 40 yard pass. Then Fergus Falls came right back with a 12 play drive finished by Heinen’s three yard plunge into the end zone for the final score.
Heinen finished the game with 42 carries for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Stachowski led Sartell rushers with 91 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown.
Hagen completed 13 of 22 passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions for Sartell while Hanson went 4 for 8 with three TD’s and one interception.
Johnson led the Fergus Falls receivers making two catches both for touchdowns. Sartell was led by Pat Fischer’s seven catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns.
Also both kickers were perfect on the point after attempts. Junior Sam Rausch was five for five for the Otters and senior Cody Partch went four for four for Sartell.
