Episode 5 “The Doctor.” on “Once Upon A Time” had fans watching Regina struggle to bring back her one true love, Daniel. The episode aired Sunday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m.
The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) is learning magic from Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) but is still hesitant to be cruel. He takes her to a unicorn and shows her how to pull out its beating heart then wants her to crush it, thereby killing the animal but she can’t. He does it instead and dismisses her for being a failure. She visits the body of the stable boy she has preserved in the mausoleum.
Back at Rumplestiltskin’s place, Regina says she is ready. Before he begins to teach her anything more, he wants to know why she wants to use magic and she admits she wants to bring her lover back from the dead. He tells her no one can do that. The Mad Hatter (Sebastian Stan) arrives and tells her he knows someone who may be able to help – a sort of wizard. He will take her to him in exchange for a royal passport that will allow him to travel wherever he wants.
The Hatter takes the Queen to wizard (David Anders) who just prefers to go by “The Doctor.” He examines Daniel’s (Noah Bean) body and is impressed with its condition. He needs a heart, a strong one for his experimental procedure. The Queen sees this as an evil use of magic and won’t go along with it so the wizard leaves.
A change of heart send the Evil Queen back to Dr. Whale with one of her enchanted hearts. He disappears into a tent, leaving her and the Mad Hatter outside while he attempts to reanimate Daniel. He returns, telling her it didn’t work, the heart was too weak. She is distraught that her last hope has just flickered out.
She returns to Rumplestiltskin to resume her magic training and discovers he has a new protégé. She reaches into the girl’s chest and plucks out her heart, crushing it without hesitation. Rumplestiltskin is pleased and welcomes her back.
The Hatter takes the wizard to see Rumplestiltskin. Seems the good doctor faked the failure at Rumple’s request so that Regina would return to him. He rewards the doctor with a stronger enchanted heart and warns him to be careful of what he traffics in as it comes with a price. Then the doctor and Hatter leave through the hat portal.
The doctor and his assistant use the heart on a body laying covered on a table and during a thunderstorm, the body is reanimated though we don’t see his face.
Regina visits Dr. Hopper for a therapy session and tells him about her encounter with Rumplestiltskin and the unicorn. She tells him about Daniel and the mausoleum where she has his body under a preservation spell. Whale tells her she can never let go of using magic until she lets go of her past.
On her way home, driving through the rain, she thinks she sees Daniel. She heads for the mausoleum only to find his body gone. Regina decides to return to Dr. Whale’s (David Anders) office to confront him.
When she arrives, she finds his office is disarray and him on the floor with his arm torn from its socket. She calls for help and David (Josh Dallas) arrives and challenges Regina to explain her actions. She explains that Dr. Whale told her he used one the hearts from her vault to reanimate Daniel but he’s changed, a monster. David asks where Daniel has gone and she believes he would have gone to the stables. It’s where their story began. David panics because he left Henry (Jared S. Gilmore) there.
Meanwhile Daniel-stein has shown up at the stable, freaking out all the horses. Henry tries to ask the stranger to settle down but he picks Henry up and flings him to the ground. Regina and David arrive and get Daniel’s attention. David takes Henry outside and Regina tries to talk to Daniel-stein. He seems to be listening as he draws nearer but then grabs her by the throat. She pleads with him to talk and tells him she loves him.
As if coming out of a trance, Daniel re-emerges. They embrace but Danieal seems to be in incredible pain. He begs her to let him go. She can’t. She has waited too long for this day and she tells him she loves him again. He tells her to go find love again and turns to leave as the pain transforms him back into a monster. She is forced to use her magic to stop him from hurting her. She pulls his beating heart from his chest and crushes it in her hand as she whispers a pained goodbye to Daniel.
Regina returns to Dr. Hopper’s office and admits she used magic again. Meanwhile, Dr. Whale returns to Gold’s shop and asks him to reattach his arm with the use of magic. Gold asks why he was so desperate to get back to his world. He says he wanted to try his technique on his own brother. Gold then tells Victor he is delighted that he now realizes magic is more powerful than science.
