OMG! Seattle Musial Theatre is kicking off its 35th season with the preciously pink “Legally Blonde: The Musical” September 14th – October 7th. The original Broadway run received seven Tony nominations, including Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, and ten Drama Desk nominations, including Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Book of a Musical.
“Legally Blonde: The Musical” follows the fun and flirty journey of sorority star Elle Woods, who gets dumped by her boyfriend for someone more “serious.” Fortunately, Elle doesn’t take the news lying down. She puts down her credit card, hits the books, and gains admission to Harvard Law in order to prove her worth. (Though not without her chihuahua Bruiser, of course.) Along the way, Elle finds that chasing after a boy is less important than she thought, and proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style.
The musical is based on the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon and, like its cinematic predecessor, caught many by surprise. At first glance, the story of a sorority girl trying to catch a husband sounds like a bore bordering on vapid, but there is really so much more to it than that. The fact that Elle is blonde and speaks like a Valley girl is no reason to assume that she is stupid, quite the contrary. It’s a delightful story with a “be yourself and the world is your oyster” flavor and an exuberant score — Seattle Musical Theatre’s upcoming production is sure to be a treat.
“It is a story of a young woman who learns to take control of her situation and not accept the role society tells her she must play,” says Director Sam Pettit. “Through Elle’s journey we see that being feminine does not mean being weak.”
A local favorite, Pettit heads the artistic team as Director, Choreographer, and Scenic Designer. His recent directing/choreography credits include “Oliver!,” “Pirates of Penzance,” “Anything Goes,” “Peter Pan,” “Longstocking,” “Camelot,” “Damn Yankees,” “Once Upon A Mattress,” “Annie,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Godspell,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” and “Nunsense,” as well as choreographing this year’s official Pullalyup Fair TV commercial.
The artistic team for “Legally Blonde: The Musical” also includes Brandon Peck (Music Director), Deborah Pierce (Assistant Choreographer), Jocelyne Fowler (Costume Designer), Kim Campbell (Sound Designer), Marc King (Lighting Designer), and Becca Hines (Properties Coordinator).
“Legally Blonde: The Musical” stars Carly Hebert as “Elle Woods,” last seen on SMT’s stage as “Amber Von Tussle” in “Hairspray.” Carly studied music and vocal performance at Cornish College of the Arts and has been seen in a variety of shows all across town. She will be joined on stage by some old and some new faces to SMT, including Ellen Dessler (Paulette), Matt Giles (Emmett), Stegar Thompson (Professor Callahan), Mark Tyler Miller (Warner), Kate Sumpter (Vivienne), Erika Zabelle (Brooke), Lindsay Powers (Serena), Krista Gibbon (Margot), Kate Mosbarger (Pilar), and Meghan Derr (Enid).
The ensemble of Legally Blonde: The Musical also brings some new talent to our stage, as well as some favorites from previous seasons, including Devon Allen, Mike Bowers, Mikey Dela Cruz, Stephen Loyd, Suzanne Mehrej, Andrew Murray, Elizabeth Richmond, Brendan Rosell, Bethanie Russell, Marissa Ryder, and McKenna Turner.
