So this is the moment a lot of the gay community has been waiting for. How does Obama feel about marriage equality now that the fire of the various communities has died down on the subject? On Oct. 26 President Obama told Sway Calloway of MTV that he will not push the issue of gay marriage the second term if he is reelected. Future generations must take the reins of this fight to insure that gay Americans receive the rights that are inherently due to us. Is that not what this column has preached all along? Whatever the case maybe it looks likes Barack Obama is finished doing his part for gay activism and it is time for him to get back to real business.
Please, don’t take the last sentence the wrong way. President Obama has made it very clear that he still favors gay marriage and believes in marriage equality for all but the subject matter will not receive the same attention or activism, from his camp, as we have seen in the past few months. For a lot of members of the gay community this was expected or at least this is standard political operating procedure during an election year. The Democratic Party has done its part in supporting the gay community for its loyalty to the party and now our time has passed.
This is the same issue a lot of people in the black community felt when Obama was running for office first time around. Black Americans worked so hard and struggled long to reach the goal of having the first black president in office. The black community wanted a president from the community which would have the good of that community at heart. To have a person remember the struggles of African-Americans and all that we have been through is something the black community was hoping to find in Barack Obama. Now, no one is saying that he did not live up to the expectation of this country’s black minority but if you would ask, some would disagree with that observation.
The point being made is that Obama spoke great wisdom to the gay community when he basically said gay Americans must continue the social reaction that he is partly responsible for. Barack Obama was a driving force for change to support the LGBT’s cause and now we must be an atomic force for equality. Whatever you believe is the reason for President Obama’s loyalty to the gay community; the LGBT must not waste the opportunity that is not afforded to us now.
So thank you President Obama for helping the gay community clear the way for a brighter future and now the LGBT must take over where he left off.
