New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was a matter of suspense, surprise and intrigue.
The riveting event kicked off with Fashion’s Night Out, an annual event where eager shoppers, self-proclaimed fashionistas and other fashion socialites meet up for a night of celebration, debuts, and glammed up parties.
This year’s Fashion Night Out included events hosted by Upscale boutique Scoop NY, popular retail chain Lord & Taylor, and budding shoe designer Ivanka Trump. Scoop NY partied the night away in style with a star studded block party with a lovely surprise drop in from designer Zac Posen. Lord & Taylor hosted a party with revved up attendees that featured fashion designer Max Azria and his always stylish wife Lubov Azria. Ivanka Trump handed out goodie bags filled with fashion goodies namely a pair of enterprising shoes from her polished shoe line. The appetizing Fashion’s Night Out had many people in a frenzy of excitement and hungry for the series of runways shows to come.
Now time for the main entrée: Fashion Week. Suspense was the theme for spring 2013 and taking the leading roles were Rodarte, Brood by Serkan Sarier Herve Leger and The Blonds. Rodarte featured a mix of solids and prints foiled over each other in a sea of patterns whilst utilizing cutting edge construction. Brood by Serkan Sarier was all about floral prints with a fusion of vivacious colors. If you wanted to make a statement next spring Herve Leger is your best bet. The collection featured bold geometric prints, color blocking and form fitting tailoring. To the opposite end of Herve Leger was the Blonds with their zany meets couture inspired by Wonder Woman collection fitted with spiked studs, latex leggings and what appears to be Swarovski crystals.
Surprises included 3.1 Phillip Lim who opted for a more grunge, street savvy approach by way of graphic tees, baggy clothes and plaid patterns—a far departure from his previous spring showing where sherbet colors, and urbane sophistication was the central theme. Calvin Klein was chock full of surprises with his strictly black and white collection gravitating away from the neutral and pastel like colors that dominated his spring 2012 season. Other surprises included the Zac Posen show where Uber supermodels Alek Wek and Naomi Campbell took to the runway.
Intrigue found it’s way onto the floors of Marchesa, BCBGMaxAzria, J. Mendel and Badgley Mischka. Marchesa featured a few sheer numbers that were simply captivating, including a sheer one shoulder blue number with gold trimming underneath it. BCBGMaxAzria’s innovative designs enlisted a mix of pastel colors, black, and a harness belt like stitching, not to mention a few subtle flowy dresses. J. Mendel and Badgley Mischka both took glamour to new lengths with red carpet ready ensembles, some of the best this season.
Trends for the spring 2013 as interpreted by the runways include floral prints (Rebecca Minkoff, Anna Sui , Alice + Olivia) black and white: (Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang, Cushine et Ochs, ), lace (Jill Stuart, Jason Wu, Tadoshi Shoji) and stripes (Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Belstaff, Emerson). Here are 17 run away hits from the NY spring 2013 runways.
